I'm not sure the Video Veiw can be docked. If that's not where it is, I would guess it's opening with coordinates off screen. I know you can set coordinates for Dialog positions in the registry, but I'm not seeing anywhere to do this for Views. You might have to 're-personalize' SONAR by launching it while holding Ctrl+Shift, but you'll want export/import keyboard shortcuts to restore them, and there may be other preferences that are lost; I'm not sure what-all is affected by re-personalizing.

there is no video preview window poping up to check the video live

Are you sure it's not in the multi dock and you're just not seeing it?
type a "D" on your keyboard and then SHFT+D to maximize and then also check the docking options
if you find it and you can then undock it.

I'll do that tonite !
I'll let you informed of whatever I find.
Many thanks so far for all your very nice comments !

Now I'm home and testing..
I found the video window was open but 'crushed' at the bottom
of the SONAR screen. So I resized it and now I can clearly see
this video view window with the SMPTE red letters on top of it. Fine.
BUT when I play back the imported video this video view
only shows a static purple square with no video playing..
I went thru all different preference settings with no success..
Again I'm using a video card with 2 simultaneous HDMI screens.
Sonar runs on the left screen and there is nothing on the right one.
All is running inside the left screen.
Weird...
BTW The imported video file is MPG1 and I can clearly see it on the upper video track.

It does not work..

For MP4, MOV import files there are error window popping up:
Unable to import video - Unrecognized file format or invalid file.
.AVI or MPG1 files work.

See the 2 screen snapshots of my program:

http://www.arcenson.com/public/Sonar%20X3%20screen%20snapshot%202.JPG
(this second snapshot does not show the bottom purple view video window but its there in the program)
(print screen cannot snap the live purple square)

What is odd is that at SONAR startup, when it loads my project you can see a fraction of a second the image in the view video window but it disappears quickly and the view video screen gets purple and stay purple.
I don't know what to do.

I forgot to mention that I have 2 firewire video grabbers/players
connected on my PC for Vegas when capturing video.
Maybe SONAR 'sees' these devices connected and switch to one
of them for view video screen (external) when it starts my project instead of
using the actual default PC view.. (??)
Again I'm not close to my PC now and will have to check that
when I'm back home.

how about an .mpg type 1 ?

SONAR is able to import MPG1 files but the view video window
does not show anything..

And.. is this normal ??

What would help me a lot is a very short 'working' video file from
another SONAR X3 user that worked for him..

The file type would not matter..
What matters would be that the file shows in the view video
window of that Sonar user..
Anybody could PM me on that..

I'm suspecting it might be that you don't have the codecs to decode the video.
I just tested with a 4 minute .mp4 at 1920 x 1080 in x3 and had no problems.
It ran smooth as silk.

I'll render a piece of that video and put it up on my site for you but it will take a bit of time.
I'll put a link here when it's up.

In the mean time here's a list of the codecs I have installed using "Sherlock" to find and print a list of them.
http://www.sightsea.com/renders/Codecs.txt

OK That was pretty quick:
Here's about 30 seconds of the .mp4 that I just tested with:
http://www.sightsea.com/renders/steve_karl_club_delta_test.mp4
(actually I re rendered 30 seconds from the same vegas project)

You should be able to see a good sync between the audio and video with the guy in the blue shirt pointing / directing the note hits, the fingers on the guitar necks and the box closing on the snare hit.

Steve,
Thanks for your nice support.
>I'm suspecting it might be that you don't have the codecs to decode the video.
I've been able to play all the videos that were not accepted by Sonar using VLC player.
I suppose VLC added the correct video codecs when I installed it months ago.. (??)
And I ask again the question:
is this normal ??
