Hey folks.  I use an M Audi sound card.  It has midi in and out ports.  I saw a yamaha d60 electric drum kit for sale at a great price.  It apparently also has midi in and out.    Does anyone know how to connect a device like this in order to use it as a trigger for Session Drummer please?    Is it simply midi out from the trigger device going to the midi in on the m Audio?     I havent bought the unit yet but i want to make it possible to use it as a trigger first.
Thanks

MIDI out to MIDI in is pretty much it. Then load Session Drummer into a track, create a MIDI track that points to it with the kit as it's MIDI in and that should do it. So long as you ensure everyhting's on the same MIDI channel.

You may or may not need to create a drum map in Sonar or change which pads the kit associates with each note as well to make sure e.g. the kit snare triggers the SD snare.

Some electronic kit brains are better than others in terms of MIDI co-operation and it's worth checking the kit's MIDI spec to make sure it can domwhat you want.

One problem might be latency (the time taken by the DAW to receive and process the MIDI then output the resulting audio. If you can't get it low enough to be comfortable one way round the problem is to play the kit while monitoring it by listening to the kit's audio output, while at the same time recording the drumming as MIDI (not audio) in Sonar. Once the MIDI's recorded you can then point the MIDI track at Session Drummer.

Thanks TL.  The unit is second hand so no come back if latency or its brain mapping is an issue.  I might hold off for the moment.    The only reason i was thinking about going this road is that i find session drummer fine for basic beats.   But trying to configure rolls the way a real drummer would come down off the toms is a bit of a nightmare.   I was thinking an external device would allow be to put in drum rolls a lot easier.  I'll struggle on for now.  Thanks again.
