Can't bounce a midi VST to audio track

Title says it all. I must be missing something here. Back in the old days, when I started using Cakewalk DAW I could convert a midi track to an audio track and then apply effects to said track. I know I can dump sysex from my hardware synths, but is there an easier/better way to get patch info? I don't think I've ever owned a patch librarian on the PC, though I had plenty on the Mac.
