Do I need to connect via USB to use instrument definition?

Hello everyone! I am returning from 7 year hiatus and simply do not recall how I used to do this.I need to add Instrument Definition for applicable Synths. Split Clips has stopped working - any ideas why?

Sonar crashes even after opening in Sonar safe mode removing all plug-ins at same point.
