Comping mutes preivous takes

I must be doing something dopey - I've used takes lanes / comping, etc. many times and haven't had this issue. I'm recording a section of music in a loop in comp mode. Once I'm dong recording the multiple takes - only the last take lane is not muted - all previous take lanes have the waveform greyed..
