Advantage of DSP effects built into an interface?

Why do interfaces have built in effects? Is it for running in a standalone mode? If all I was using it for is to get audio into Sonar, is there any value to having the effects inside the audio interface?..

Running Korg Nanopad2 Editor at the same time as Sonar

I'm sure I used to do this, mayben on my last windows 7 laptop. I can't seem have the Nanopad connected to both Sonar and the Editor software at the same time. I can edit and save in the Editor and then open Sonar and use fine. But if I want to Edit the layout with Sonar open, I get an error message..
