Optical TOSLINK to coaxial converter

Since I switched to an RME Babyface I haven't used my VRM Box because the RME has a TOSLINK optical output and the Babyface has a coaxial S/PDIF input and I haven't dealt with that problem yet. Why are BNC clock sync cable not more standard? Like why not just make them RCA? The hookups seem fragile and stick out. Guitar center sells RCA adapters. So I was just curious what the advantages are...
