How can I disable the Internet on my DAW in a network of 3 computers?

I have a network of 3 computers. If I go to Control panel / Network Connections and disable the Internet connection it disables it for all 3 computers. I'd rather keep my LAN connection working and just disable the Internet for the DAW only. Currently I have Windows Firewall disabled, but I'm wonder..

Is it worth upgrading on this older MB?

Found out (too late) windows 8 does not support the drivers for my firewire interfaces!! Has anyone had any experiences yet? I can not even use my interfaces!..

ESATA cables?

I had some troubles with early ESATA stuff and now I'm superstitious about it. Are there any cables that are better than others? Is cable length a factor for performance for ESATA? I've been thinking of getting two 6 foot cables but could make do with shorter if they work better. Thanks for any tips..
