Query: How bad is it to "re"-master something that is already mastered, as in from a CD?

Unfortunately I think the original pre-master file for an old album may be lost. I know for certain the "producer" reused the tapes we tracked to originally which really ticked me off because I'd really prefer to remix it... however I'm thinking I may not even be able to get the premaster either. So..
