Automate VST effect ON/OFF?

I've wondered about this for years and now am at a point where I need to turn a VST effect on at a certain point in the song and then have it remember that so when I rewind it's off and then comes on at the point where it's needed...I've automated volume and pan a bunch in the past, but never could ..

Bluetubes brickwall limiter on Master ouput, sounds good , minus the 'pumping'

So I figure that some kind of limiter or compressor across the master output of a nearly finished tune would punch things up, so I put in the BlueTubes brickwall limiter across the master output and sure enough, the sounds is bigger, punchier, louder....but, hearing a quick mixed down verison in win..
