MASTERING - LP64 Compressor Ratio - SONARXIb

EQ + Compressor + ...Boost11?  + Limiter
Would one of you Creative engineer types please explain LP64 compressor Ratio?

Reading  this thread: Mastering Tips Needed Please
and viewing this vid: How To Do Your Own Audio Mastering

There is some confusion with Using SONARs LP64 compressor.
Here is the setup I tried:
LP64EQ
Subtle Analog Warmth

LP64 Compressor
Mastering (Lighter) Ratio 20.5 ...?  (video suggested Ratio 2:1)

MeldaProduction Limiter (since i did not see anything in sonar listed as a "Limiter")
Threshold -0.2

What about using Boost11, is that supposed to be used as a limiter?
I really dislike mixing / mastering and don't have the quality hearing for it, but I would like to learn more about it and A/B the difference myself, once I better understand the settings.

In most cases, one limiter is really all you need to control any gain and overage problems with the master bus. Anything you use before the limiter could be saturation, tape sim, EQ, etc. Putting another compressor in front of the limiter is really overkill. Mastering is not the mysterious mojo that it is made out to be. Bypass your limiter, FIX THE MIX! Once the mix sounds great without the limiter on, it will sound fantastic with the limiter turned back on. As for Boost11, I also wonder what folks have to say. I have seen about half for and half against. I have used it and it sounds pretty good to my ear. Some of the guys in here have slammed it pretty good. I will say if you have to turn it up a pretty good bit, it does start to sound harsh. That goes back to making sure the mix works before you even switch the limiter on. The less limiting you have to do, the better the overall sound will be. By the way, I find myself using the Melda more myself. Those are some great 64 bit plugs. This is my opinion on mastering. For everyone you ask you will probably get another answer. The only catch in Mastering is the quality of your listening room and your monitors. Always check your mixes on several different types of systems. Home stereo, Boom Box, Car stereo, etc. It does get quite involved but if you stick with it you can get pretty close to "commercial" results.

have a look at the compressor included (the sonitus one also)

    http://www.doctorproaudio...s-compressors_en.shtml

esp. "With a 20:1 ratio and above the compressor is considered to work as a limiter"

if you learn about each unit used to effect the sound / sculpture of a track (and then mix as a whole 2 channels)

have a read of  the pdf on this page for a start
    http://www.izotope.com/pr...udio/ozone/guides.html

also have a look at the techniques forum here

there are lots of books on the subject..  look out for things by "bob katz" and people like that , who are well known in the field of mixing.

    short version : it's a deep / big subject..
