M-Audio Audio Buddy

Considering getting one of these and want to see any opinions of those who use it. Using it just for guitar. The reviews seem to be pretty good.

Thanks

I don't like mine because I get a distortion when the signal is hot (miked guitar amp). I have to record at something around -25 dB then it's ok. I probably got a defective one. I would check out homerecording.com for info on cheap preamps.

I got one and it's very good for the price. I don't have any distortion with mine, I guess you could get distortion if you crank the dial to the max. I'd say it's a very good price/performance choice.

I've had problems powering two condensor mic's at the same time. seems the -48v phantom power supply isn't as robust as it needs to be.

Personally, I would save up the extra $80 and get their DMP3. It is very highly regarded!

I'm sure the Audio Buddy will get you buy, but mic pres are not a place to scrimp. While it's a given that any mic pre under a grand is probably far from "pro", much like mics a hundred dollar difference can make a pretty big difference.

    A stereo mic pre under a hundred bucks...personally, I wouldn't. And I'm poor...

I used to use one as well, and it was fine for some things, but I really had distortion problems from my Rode NT1 condenser - not so much problem with an AKG c200 (or such)...I thouhgt mine was defective, but I think it's just an impedance thing. Anyway, every other thing I've tried works great. It's an ok step to start with, but I think you could do better for a little more money - even take a look at the new Line6 devices, the Toneport UX1 or UX2 - $129-$199.
