M-Audio Fast Track Ultra or Ultra 8r ?

After reading several posts around here, I am considering purchasing either the M-Audio Fast Track Ultra or Ultra 8r. Most of the work will be using XLR inputs and preamps recording acoustic guitar, violin, mandolin. Aside from the extra I/O, is there much difference between the 2 devices? I would consider the 8r if there were additional benefits or upgrades. I am not much on reading spec sheets but they seem pretty similar.

Is there anyone that has first hand experience with both that can share some thoughts? Thanks

I had bad luck with the Fast track ultra on my laptop , but my laptop daw was a disaster anyway. However the Fast track ultra would disconnect itself which according to the M audio forum was a known issue.  I ended up returning it.

I am however using the Ultra 8r successfully on a Dell similar to yours.

The FTU and FTU8R won't work in "High Performance" mode with laptops that have higher end video cards.
You can run in standard mode... which isn't bad... but you can't select the 64-sample ASIO buffer size.
With a tower based machine, you typically don't encounter this problem.
I've used the FTU8R successfully (in High Performance Mode) with quite a few different machines.

I'm using the Ultra 8R with my new Lenovo IdeaPad (with an i5 Processor) with Win 7 64 bit, and the little bit I've done for testing it is working OK.  I just got the laptop last week so it hasn't been in any actual recording sessions.  Just some testing I've done with it and 4 audio tracks.
