M-Audio Keystation 88ES has transposed and....
I tried doing what the manual said and now the intonation is completely off. Like, it's the "right" note, but it's like a quarter tone off. I don't get it. Any ideas?

hard reset. I have a Keystation Pro 88...while it is old, it's 1000 mult-function buttons, dials, banks, button button combos, etc have wigged out on me more than a few times. This solves problem s for me. I'll keep my fingers xrossed for ya! the manuals can be googled... The Pro is way different than the es

Don't have an 88 ES, but almost every synth or controller I've ever used has a fine tune, either wi a 0 -128 value or in cents. check to make sure that's centerd , if you have such a thing.

Wow, update. My entire computer (the laptop in my signature) is playing EVERYTHING too fast, like a whole step. I just went on You Tube..... played my guitar along with "Enter Sandman," whole step off! WTF! Reinstalling my interface drivers now.... stay tuned.....

Ok, reinstalling the driver fixed it. WTF, that was annoying!

Ok, what the flying hell.... nope, still screwed up. It was fine when I powered the laptop back on after reinstalling the driver. Went to track some keys with the keystation.... completely different key than I recorded it. Like a whole step off. ANY IDEAS?

sampling rate possibly? See if that changes once you start play back. I had an issue where a device tried to change the sampling rate from 44.1 to 48 That caused everything to playback fast.

Ok, so I fixed the issue with the entire computer playing too fast and I have now fixed the issue with the Keystation playing the wrong note, which was my original question. So, here's something else that's related: This is the second time this has happened.... my most recent project completely changed tempos and, as a result, the whole project is now almost a whole step down from where it should be. (should be G major, playing in F major). Anyone know what's going on?

oh and the sampling rate is what it should be, 44.

The thing to check with checking Sample Rate is to see if the Sample Rate is set within the user interface for the Audio Interface to the same Sample Rate that is set within the Sonar project. IF one or the other is different than the other one, then you can very well have things play back either too sharp or too flat - such as one being 44.1 k and the other at 48 k. Another thing to check is whether or not the loaded SOUND that the M-Audio Keystation 88 ES is triggering uses the Mod Wheel to control some aspect of the sound. I used to have a similar issue in projects that used a particular synth preset for a particular synth (Native Instruments Reaktor 5). I don't recall ever figuring out why things were goofy, but it had something to do with the mod wheel, and if I changed the Sonar Preferences option to NOT zero out all controllers when playback stopped, the issue would stop presenting itself - the issue was that for some reason, the Reaktor 5 sound would load up and play, but for some reason would change pitch down exactly one whole step. If I closed the project and loaded it back, it would fix it to play the notes back at the right pitch. DROVE ME NUTS. I happen to have and love that same Keystation 88 ES controller, and I don't find there to be much at all in the area of it having many things it actually controls (unlike my M-Audio AxiomPro 61, which has all kinds of faders and knobs and performance controlling functionality), so it seems quite unlikely for the Keystation 88 ES to actually be causing whatever issues you are having. Perhaps you can explain more about what synth and preset you are controlling with the Keystation controller, as maybe it is something as simple to fix, like tweaking a Sonar preference or the preset. The sampling rate is fine -- 44.1 in Sonar and 44.1 in my interface's software. At this point, it's only one project that's messed up. Last night, I went into my interface software and checked, "disable host control," and that made You Tube start playing music at the correct speed (I didn't try Spotify or anything, but I GUESS that would be ok, too). Then I went to record keys again in my new project, which was still messed up....everything is sharp by a half or whole step, I can't remember. I went into another project from a couple of weeks ago, that one was fine. A few weeks ago, I did make a "project template" file which has all my stuff already laid out so I don't have to start from scratch every single time. Maybe I clicked something accidentally to slow down the project? It DID happen to the project I described above, the one I had recorded a couple of weeks ago and I had to re-record all the audio..... thankfully it wasn't much that time, and it has been fine since then. To answer your question -- I rarely use any of the crazy synths or anything. Last night, I was using True Piano and just doing something piano stuff. The mod wheel was all the way down, on "minimum."

I will play around with my Keystation 88 ES controller today, and see if I can figure out anything else for you to look at. Does this project by chance happen to have imported audio? My son created a project that had playback issues with too slow or fast (cannot recall which, but it certainly wasn't playing back correctly), and it ended up having something to do with the nature of a specific set of imported audio. If you respond back telling me you DO have imported audio, I'll go off and look at that project and rediscover what we figured out to fix it and give you that info. :) And separately, it seemed to me from reading your post like you may be sharing your audio interface drivers between both Sonar and having it used as the Windows Default Audio Device, as a separate observation. Is this indeed how you are running? Bob Bone
