MB recommendation for Intel Dual 2 Core

Don't see me as a dinosaure before you read on...:)
Monitoring this forum I've compiled the necessary information to build an I7 system and I have and idea of how much it will cost me.
But an I7 system is an overkill for what I do but I'm holding upgrading to S8.2 because I saw a performance drop of my system (I'm currently using a custom built AMD XP3200 (Barton) system) when I went from S4 to S7.
Considering from where I'm coming from (XP3200) I am investigating the price of a Dual Core 2 system (E7x00) and depending on the outcome I'll decide which way I'll go (I7 vs Dual 2).
What are the MBs of choice for the Dual 2 Core?
Other than the fact that I don't use samples, soft synths and DDR2 RAM are more than enough I won't provide any further info on how I'm using my DAW; what I need is a starting point.
Merci pour votre aide,
Mario

Don't buy 775. It's a dead and a waste of money. You could do a better i3 or i5 system for around the same money and an 1156 i7 system for a little more.

Like I have mentionned in my post intro I am aware of the Ix path, which path will force me to
go "brand new" anyway if I am thinking future upgrades.

The reason why I am not providing info on my DAW usage is because is that depending on the type
of DAW suitables boards available I may decide to re-use part of my current hardware.

That decision, which I'll do on my own, is all based on the motherboard; this is why I'm only looking
for mobo that are known now to be stable for DAW and since there are people on this forum that
have already build Core2 system I figure asking the question here dould give me a good starting
    point.

But I am totally aware that in the end the Ix path, and the extra cost associated with it will prove
to be be the right decision after all.

Hello... Gigabyte P35 X38 P45 or X48 versions... 1333 Dual/Quad ready Intel 775 socket boards... some with TI fire wire chip set... and the R versions have the RealteK 889 HD audio chip... excellent on board sound... L versions 888 HD audio chip... most have DDR2 memory a few with DDR3... so beware you get what you want. Also you have USB 2.0 and IDE hardrive connecors yet... if you need them.

    I just built a box....

i5-750 quad core 2.66 ghz chip in an ASUS P7P55D MB... with 4GB RAM ... running XP.

This board has a chip set that works with firewire.

Hello again... My economic/performance hardware upgrade step from a P4 was to this motherboard an ASROCK 4CoreDual-SATA2... Socket 775 1066 Dual/Quad Intel processors.

    http://www.asrock.com/mb/...?Model=4COREDUAL-SATA2

        1) This board has both an AGP and PCI-X video slots... I used my old AGP card.
        2) This board has both DDR and DDR2 memory slots... I used my old DDR memory.
        3) This board has 4 IDE and 2 SATA connectors... I used my old IDE hard and optical drives.
        4) This board has 7.1 Realtek ALC888 HD audio chip... no sound card needed.
        5) This board has 10/100 LAN... no network card needed.
        6) This board has 4 USB ports and 3 PCI slots and 4 GB max memory.

The only thing I bought was the motherboard and a Dual Core E6420 CPU... everything connected to the original power supply and case... currently I see prices listed at about $65 for the retail box motherboard, and I would consider watching EBAY for an E7400, an E6600, or a Q6600 CPU... all could be found for under $100... and are W7 64-bit ready... a huge XP performance boost.
You can then upgrade, at a later time, a SATA hardrive and back up important data... a PCI-X video card... and then that large eye candy LCD monitor... Windows 7... etc... and you will have Hardware compatible for your next i3, i5, and i7 system.

This website shows a performance graph of old and current CPU's...
    http://www.cpubenchmark.net/common_cpus.html

3 of the 10 top performers are socket 775 processors... only 1 out of 10 is an i5...
