MC5 and 5.1

   I don't have MC5 (I use sonar 8pe). But a guy was
asking me if I knew anything that could help him
learn more about recording/mixing in 5.1.   I don't
do any 5.1 stuff so I can't help there either.

My first thought was he may be better learning more
about mixing before taking on such a task but if it's all in
the name of fun then why not.

Any of you have any thoughts or help or info for this guy?
It seems he uses MC5 so I can't help there either.

MC5 does not have surround capabilities of any kind.  it's limited to ONE STEREO OUTPUT only (regardless of what the soundcard can do).

Thanks Beagle. He had a song in the songs forum and
later mentioned that to me(5.1) that is. I'm guessing he
is playing back on a 5.1 (virtual) sound card or system.
I can't even imagine trying to mix a stereo tune by
monitoring with a system like that.

I did however once hear a cd Seems like it was "Mercy Me"
that apparently was recorded in such a fashion that it would
play either in stereo or 5.1.   It was really cool sounding in 5.1
but that was using some kind of "decoding" that I don't
    understand yet.

Hi guys and thanks Jimmy, for opening this post - yeah Reese, it was me that asked and Jimmy mentioned an interest in 5:1 as well but like he said it was more as an info and fun kinda exploring.  The 5:1 suround speaker system I bought was originally for output of a DVD player, but I got the idea that it would make a better monitor for my studio's MC5 setup than plain old PC speakers  (and I was right except that the bass is crappy and the rear L&R wont work, for obvious reasons).

So, glad to know that it isn't a MC5 function anyhow.   I'm considering tearing apart the woofer and installing a bigger one, and disconnecting the rear L&R speakers,  then it may function well.   Or, I could start yet another post of "what is a good monitor system for a low cost..." but I'm sure that's already been posted elsewhere.  But thanks for looking into it, at least I won't be wasting time trying to make it work!    -  John

Technology drives me to drink. Fortunately, it's a short drive..

yep - you'd have to upgrade to SHS to get more than 2 (stereo) outputs and even then there aren't any surround sound mixing functions in SHS, you have to upgrade to Sonar for that.

jimmy - I wasn't aware of Mercy Me doing a song like that!  that's pretty cool - I'd like to know more about how they did that.  and I'd like to listen to it, too!

I may be mistaken but it seems I recall something of this
nature. It's been a while but if I remember right I was playing
some CD's on my "Bosten Acoustics" (brand) surround
system. And I think it would detect if the cd was surround
    capable.

I had played other cd's and they just sounded like stereo.
I put in this one cd and ( I think was mercy me) and the
sound came from all round as if the guitar was in one
speaker and this and that in another.

       The system has a floor sub/mid upper/l side/r side
l back/ r back totaling 5 speakers. The sound was just
incretible. If I find out anything for sure Ill let you know.
It may have been the cd with "i can only imagine"
but Im only guessing from memeory.

Allthough I've got so many things to learn and
do at some point I would like to get into the 5.1
thing just to know something about it.

Something that seems to make sence is: If a movie
has all this stuff coming from here and there then it
would make sence that "music" played in the movie
    would do that too.

I'm refering to a real decoded 5.1 and not just a
    simulated surround sound.
