MC6 - Dotted notes and "last touched" duration

Hello,
I upgraded from Music Creator 2003 to 6 a couple months ago. There's stuff that used to be quite easy that I'm having some difficulty with now. For background info, I'm using Windows 7, I use MC for purely MIDI tracks, and I generally compose in staff notation (except for drums).

If I wanted to insert a dotted quarter note in MC 2003, I could press 4, then ., and then enter the note. I've found the ctrl + shift + 4  to get the quarter note, but is there any easy way to get the dot that doesn't require right-clicking the note-duration box?

I've also seen the "Last Touched" option for note duration (this was default behavior in MC 2003). I have not seen it work. Let's say I previously selected a sixteenth note for note duration. I right-click the note duration box and choose "Last Touched". Then I click a pre-existing eighth note. Then I enter a new note. It's a sixteenth note. This is true in both piano roll and staff notation. What am I missing?

Thanks.
