MC6 not playing all notes

Music Creator 6 is not playing all the notes of my projects. I have a project I created in MC5 and one I created in MC6. In both cases I wrote half-note chords in Staff view on a TTS-1 Piano track. When I play them, it doesn’t play all the chords. It’s sort of every other chord, but the pattern is inconsistent. In Preferences > Audio > Devices, if I push the latency all the way up, it plays more chords, but still not all. (And that's way too much latency.) When I open projects that came with Cakewalk, they play fine. Any ideas what I should do?

I'm a novice, so I yield to what some of the more experienced guys may post, but to me it sounds like you have a polyphony issue.  Depending on the synth you choose, you can play only so many keys at one time.  In the old days, (late 1980's when I was using Voyetra Sequencer Plus for dos), I had to limit my songs to eight notes at a time or less.  Any notes beyond 8 would either not get played or they would cut off a previously struck note earlier that expected to allow for that note to sound.  Try soloing a track which drops notes and experiment with other synths (not so much changing the sound, but if you are using TTS-1, try SoundCenter).  If you continue to have notes not played, then I suspect your loaded up with keystrokes to make the chord arrangement  you speak of.  In that case, maybe split the note data among multiple tracks and assign to them the same synth and patch.  For each track you add to the split should allow you to play more of the notes in your arrangement.

Could be the polyphony issue but also could be several other things as well.

Could be the latency settings.

Could be the sound card. (I'd put my money on this as the cause)

Could be that the half notes are actually not half notes. Depending on how they were entered, (mouse or keys) they could actually be longer than half notes. If the first note is still held when the second one triggers, that trigger will often NOT happen and the note sounds like it's missing. Each note has an on and an off trigger point. If the on is still active, the first note gets priority until it's off happens, the second note's on gets dropped.  Right click on the note in the staff view and the note properties window opens. Shorten the note duration and see if that solves it. This used to really confuse me until I figured this out.

As far as having too many notes, no chord contains any more than 5 notes, so that shouldn't be the problem. As far as the sound card, I don't see how the that could be the problem if it's playing some chords but not playing others. The note duration of the half notes are exact - there's no overlap with the next note. As a test, I inserted an audio track and wrote some chords in it using Staff View. Those didn't play at all. Songs I didn't write, such as the demos that come with Cakewalk, play fine. I'm still scratching my head about this.

I forgot to thank you guys for your responses - thanks for the suggestions. I had also posted another question, about copying tracks. I think I've solved that problem and this one by starting from scratch with a new project using MIDI tracks. I can write in staff view, and everything plays. So far, so good. Thanks again. - Stuart

The sound card is VERY important. Factory sound cards, often, can not handle the processing of synths and one of those symptoms of this is missing notes.

You can not insert midi into an AUDIO track using staff view. The result there is in fact no sound. Midi needs to be in a midi track and the output of the track must point to a synth which is in an audio track.  That's just how it has to work.
Songs I didn't write, such as the demos that come with Cakewalk, play fine. I'm still scratching my head about this.
Work through the video demos on the cakewalk site.... go to products> MC6> and look for the videos button. They have a number of very useful videos there that should help. Walk through them step by step.

I see that I need to learn learn more about sound cards, synths, and audio in general. I'll look at the MC6 videos again, and other resources.

In the meantime, recording and writing in MIDI tracks seems to be working okay, and that suits what I need for now.

Thanks again.

Stu....

There is so much to learn... just take your time and learn one thing at a time as you progress in your recording.

Before long you will know how to do all sorts of cool things. One of the best things to me was posting music and getting feedback on how to improve the various aspects of the music.

Have fun.

Hi Stu,

Just to endorse what Herb is saying, I was having the same problem using Synth1 but it has disappeared since I got myself an E-mu 1212m (pcie fitting) with ASIO drivers.  If there are ASIO or maybe WDM drivers for your soundcard, I would definitely try them.  There is also an asio for all driver which could be helpful maybe, but I never tried it so can't vouch for it.  People seem to use it, so it must help somebody. http://www.asio4all.com/

ASIO4ALL usually does work for an onboard soundcard and some soundblasters and a few other devices which don't have their own native ASIO drivers, but it should not be used for soundcards which DO have their own drivers.

ASIO4ALL is just a "bandaid" to help until you can get a recording soundcard with native ASIO drivers.
