"MICROCEPHALY" {heavy grungy alternative}

rough mix demo. rather heavy & grungy alternative rock. very compressed. guitar riff is pretty bludgeoning, but chorus is a tad sweeter w/ acoustic guitars layer in there. drums are both live apple loops meshed w/ some of Alan's hits/loops i made from the library i created of his hits. verses vox are very wet and delay laden harmony layers, contrasted to the drier, simpler two part harmony chorus and bridge. all guitars are tuned low to open C (C,G,C,G,C,E). used Mesa Boogie dual recto & Marshall JCM 2000 through 4 x 12 Mesa Boogie cab. solo is this weird modulating half-tone modal Robert Fripp-ish slice of revolving insanity.

    I'm bludgeoned...

I think the vocals need to be processed just a tiny bit more?

The serious crunch of the guitars and the heaviness of the overall mix is spoiling my monitors.  I can no longer listen to the Carpenters without them whining for more.  "Please, play ABeautifulVirus", no more Eagles!" they keep telling me.  It's as if they need the exercise ;)

Daren, this is way cool from the beginning to the end.  Your neat little production touches are the icing on the cake.  This tune doesn't have far to go to be ready for anything.  Your mojo is shining bright; can I borrow a cup?

    All the best,

Wow this was very heavy indeed. Just what I needed to kickstart my day. It's not something I usually listen to, but I found myself really liking this song.

Loved the part at 3:03 when it gets all crazy. All in all a sublime piece of musicianship.

Bit heavy heavy/wall of sound for my tastes, I'd like to hear it mixed differently as I like some of the ideas a lot, but find it hard to listen to - feels like I've been beaten up now ! ;)

Hi ABeautifulVirus, I must say that was a pretty heavy sounding song...in a way, if some of the heavy guitar crunch was dialed back a bit the voice and acoustic guitar would sound a bit Lennon to me .The acoustic part adds a nice Yin Yang type of musical contrast .You said this was a demo right? pretty ballsy for a demo . Well, buddy, this is really good!  I whittled my brain down to one cell and decided to save it 24 years ago.  It is still functioning.  :-)  The movement of the music, riffs, drums, etc is almost hypnotic.  It seems that the drums could maybe have been a bit louder.  That's personal taste, though.  Here's the deal, they lyrics are really good but if I wasn't reading them at the same time I wouldn't have understood any of it.  I know that this genre is like that in many cases but these deserve to be heard.  I don't know how you do that without changing the feel of the tune but if you could I think it would help the tune, IMHO.  Either way, it's one that got me to listen 3 times!  That's a good thing.

hey thanks Kenny & Warren a lot for the feedback. Lennon is a huge influence on me so hopefully it rubbed off somewhere :)

& yeah Warren- there are a ton of tracks on here & i ended up bussing down the drums around 4/5ths way though to save RAM, but the additional layers buried some of the kick and snare to my ears too. the ultra-low tuning also fights for frequency space w/ the kick.  hence this still sounds demo-y to my ears too.

hear ya on the vox. part of it is my stylistic bad habit lol - but like you point out it is also genre-centric. i pulled off all the delay and processing and many layers in the chorus vocals & bridge to contrast against the thick verses, so i think the volume can come up a tad in chorus as well.  i'll play around w/ it more.

good ears. thanks! i know i should provide earplugs to listeners out of courtesy lol

got your alice in chains vibe going on....
maybe a bit of Mastodon in there as well..

i'm hearing what sounds like a lot of input distortion on a lot of the tracks...
the guitars for sure, the drums seem very one dimensional, i think it's the guitar tracks masking a lot of the kick and bass guitar.

thanks batsbrew- yeah there are a ton of tracks on here- a lot were cut close to margin and i bussed some down towards end to save RAM- but the sum of them peaked in some areas which i squashed with a limiter but i should have backtracked to original input and retracked. just kinda got lazy lol

cool, Rik- l love LC- the opening riff is tripled- one is a mic'd mesa boogie dual rect, another a marshal JCM 2000, and one direct line out of the mb- so a lot of sumptuous distortion overtones kinda like Vernon

Love the grit/riff of the guitars.  To me the real star of the mix are the vocals and the delivery of them. I don't know why but your vox and production of them remind me of OASIS meets the BEATLES.  The mix is a little heavy sounding on my end. But it is a demo and a darn good one.  KUDOS!
