MIDI Capture from Drum Machine

so... I'm simply hitting play on diff drum patterns on my Alesis SR-16... and capturing midi stream on Sonar Track

1) let's say drum machine tempo = 125
2) capture one track with Sonar tempo = 125
3) capture next track SOnar tempo = 80

?? it appears that the midi data timing is diff... thus the Sonar tempo is affecting the timing.. should I then have Alesis TEMPO = Sonar TEMPO...
if I do this, then I should be able to change TEMPO of MIDI CLIP that I save

?? I tried to use Alesis BACKUP function to send midi but Sonar couldn't see any data in that scenario...

to summarize
1) should syncing Sonar Tempo with drum machine and capturing one clip be sufficient.. or should I syncing 3 diff Tempos and do three different captures at those diff tempos

BIG DISCOVERY... assumed that I should be able to send drum machine at any tempo to a capturing Sonar at any tempo.. as this is midi data I should easily be able to simply reset tempo, but it appears as though the drum machine tempo (and probably sonar tempo) is having a major effect on my building MIDI loops for future use.

Are you using MIDI sync?  This is available in Sonar and the SR16 and needs to be set accordingly so the two lock together.

Set the SR16 to slave to MTC,  it will play (in sync) when you hit record in Sonar.

Quick backup: create a song on the SR16 that includes 1 each of every pattern. Set the tempo in Sonar to Max setting.
