MIDI Channel confusion
Hi. In very old times, when I used to run Cakewalk 8 (yes, smile!) there was a simple thing to avoid MIDI channel confusion. Example. I had set up a 16 MIDI channel project (*.wrk), and having created a line in one track with, say, channel 4, I wished to use that line to add a second line to it. So I copied that line to the target track to see the note entries in piano roll. Now I changed those entries in pitch to have my second line. Of course, I wanted another instrument, and the controllers (wheel or whatsoever) in the track in channel 4 should not influence those in the target track. But since I originally had copied them from channel 4, the new entries had different pitches, but they still were assigned to channel 4. So I only had to change the track channel to a new value, marked the entire track, and right-clicked it to use "merge to clip". After that operation, all midi events in the new track had changed from channel 4 to the new one I had assigned the track to. So far the good old times. In Sonar (which I really LOVE to use), things aren't anymore that easy. If I want to change the MIDI channel of all events in one track, I will have (it seems) to open the event list and change event by event. That would be fine for 12 to 24 events, but not for hundreds of them. So: Is there any tool in Sonar to do that sort of bulk processing fast and easy? Please let me know. The confusion is often enough, that a track starts with events in the correct channel, but when I insert (by copy and paste) from another channel, then the newly inserted events retain their original channel and I cannot change that but manually. Which is time consuming, bound for errors, and slightly eating up my poor nerves. Thankx for following up. I'm sure, there are so abundantly many fine toolboxes in Sonar I just have overseen the one right before my nose which would have been of help.

scook Check out the Event Inspector Module.
Fine: I found it, but: There is no entry in the field "channel". (Which is logical, since the track starts in channel 2, then there is a passage in channel 4, finally in channel 1 events. Sorry: How do I enter the wished value (channel 2)? Sorry: Now I got it: If the events in a selected region are assigned to multiple channels, then the mudule is as confused as I am and does not return any value. In that case I cannot change the value. So I have to adjust the size of the region until I have only events with one channel. Only then I can adjust. Ok, I had stumbled over that fuzzy detail often enough, but this time definitely was the time. Thankx, Cpt. scook. :-)

You'll find the same logic applies to all of the fields within the Event Inspector If what you've selected all share a unique property value, that value will be displayed in the box. If the selection contains more than one value then what is displayed in the relative box works like this: Time = Blank Duration = 100% Pitch = +0 Velocity = +0 Channel = Blank

In case you're wondering, this is why Bounce to Clip(s) no longer overwrites event channels with the forced output channel assigned to the track: http://forum.cakewalk.com/tm.aspx?m=3200521

I've posted a few times a very simple CAL program that changes all selected events to a midi channel of your choice. You can select one track, many tracks, everything, specific notes via PRV, or specific time ranges before running the program -- whatever is selected, gets changed. Let me know if you have need for it. I have it mapped to a single key stroke and use it all the time, to cope with the PRV controller pane's weaknesses.
