MIDI Drums not working in Matrix View

I'm using SONAR X1c Producer.

I've got a simple project with a MIDI track and EZ Drummer.  I've dragged a MIDI pattern from the EZD browser into the SONAR MIDI track.  When I hit the play button, the EZD receives the MIDI data and plays.

Then I bring up the matrix view and drag the MIDI drum pattern from the MIDI track to a cell in the matrix view.  When I click on the cell to play it, the play "circle" spins but I don't hear any drums.

I recorded some audio (guitar) and dragged that into matrix view.  When I click on that cell it plays just fine.  So what am I doing wrong with the MIDI track?

I also tried dragging the MIDI pattern straight from EZD's browser into matrix view, but that doesn't work either.

I don't do much with Matrix, but have you assigned the output of the row to EZ Drummer?

The output of the row is assigned to the MIDI track that is going to EZD.  Is there more I'm supposed to do?

I did discover that I could just bounce the drum track to audio and drag the audio into the matrix.

That should work as well. I re-read your original post, and I think the issue is that the the spinning circle indicates the Matrix is standing by for you to start playback in SONAR. Disable the "Follow Transport" button at the top of the Matrix if you want to play cells without running the transport.

Or you can just start playback, and the Matrix clip will start playing. But if you have a MIDI track and the Matrix driving the same synth with the same clip, you'll get doubling of notes. So you'll want to delete or mute the clip in the MIDI track after dragging it to the Matrix. You can't mute the track, because that will mute the synth output as well, so you wouldn't hear the Matrix clip.

    Clear as mud?

That's crystal clear, but probably not it :)  (and I very much appreciate your help with this, thank you!)

I already have the "Follow transport" set to off, so I shouldn't need the transport running.  What's really strange is I added session drummer 3 to the project and created a midi input track for it and an audio output track.  Then I went to the browser, grabbed a SD3 MIDI pattern and dragged it into the matrix.  That worked fine...drums coming out of SD3.

I've run into some strange things with MIDI and SONAR before.  Maybe this is just another one.  At least bouncing the synth output to audio is a reasonable work around.
