MIDI Editing Notes & Snapping

Hello folks,

This would be my first post here, I'm pretty much a brand new user to DAW's (Some brief Cubase 4 LE experience besides this), and I'm trying to get stuck in with my hobby of music composition and production.

It's all going reasonably well so far, X1 Producer is installed along with the other 2 of 3 Discs installed (So Dimension/SD3 and stuff are up and running), and I've been toying all day with it with some progress. I'm managing well with the Session Drummer plus step sequencer, but when it comes to writing Guitar notes and editing them, it's unusually difficult.

The Staff view isn't very kind to work with. I guess I'm too used to the options nicely displayed in software like Noteworthy Composer for adjusting note length, inputting triplets and so forth.
The Piano Roll is seeming the better bet, but although I've turned Magnetism "Off", regardless of the resolution I set (4th/8th size grid) the notes insist on snapping at like 32nd size, so I can't easily line them up.

I'm using a Yamaha MM6 keyboard to input the notes (because drawing them seems a little "icky" too), and using the Quantize Cakewalk Process helps refine them, but I just can't position them how I want.

Any suggestions or fixes?

I don't see how you can really use the Step Sequencer with a Guitar. In fact, writing for the Piano and Orchestral Instruments is going to be a pain if this doesn't get any easier O_O I guess the real answer is to become more proficient on the Piano itself to "play it into Sonar", but I don't recall having this much trouble in the tacky Cubase edition I used to have.

Loving X1 Producer otherwise, I can see the possibilities are endless :P Excellent level of manipulation available. ~ Lloyd

Edit: Oh jesus christ, maybe it's FireFox, but I input paragraphs and it's completely merged them. I will fix this message via Internet Explorer to see if it helps. Oh my GOD this Forum man, I have a scrolling window, in a scrolling window, in a scrolling window, this is just a bit frustrating. Paragraphs inserted, hopefully the problem is now fixed ¬_¬

Solution: Never mind, I managed to solve the problem. Not only did I just discover the Horizontal zoom tool (only originally saw the Vertical), I have discovered I need Magnetism on Medium/High. I swear I read in some other threads through searches it needed to be turned off since it's apparent meaning was "inverted" to what it suggested. But alas, the notes are snapping across the grid nicely! Sorry to bother you with this thread, heh :P

Hey again guys,

Snapping has been working beautifully for a good while, but all of a sudden a weird condition has arose leading to whether or not it works in the Piano Roll view.

Snapping is enabled (Lit up blue), 1/16th resolution is being used. The Piano roll is displaying Vertical Gridlines with "Follow Snap Settings" enabled.

Now get this, if I zoom in by about 75%, it works perfectly. The notes move across the Vertical grid lines, snapping to each one. If I zoom out even by one step from this ~75%, the Snapping fails and I have absolute movement. The note is moving freely by "8 Ticks" I believe is the terminology, very fine movement.

Is this a glitch? I'm still plenty zoomed in to view the vertical grid lines and easily position the Notes, but the snapping just "switches off".

Okay, restarted X1 and it appears to be fixed. I checked the X1c patch list, apparently Piano Roll is getting it's own Snapping feature separate from everything else, hopefully Cakewalk will pick up on the issue when they implement that.

On a side note, after rebooting X1, I almost lost my Track View off the edge of my monitor. I had to Alt+Spacebar to access the drop down to move it, good lord. I love the multi-monitor support though.

Edit: Okay, I apparently changed a setting somewhere with a shortcut key (I can only imagine), because the problem has come about again already. Any thoughts on what I changed?
Edit Again: It's working intermittantly!?!? Okay, I'm just going to tolerate it for now, as much as it's pushing my buttons.

I've not read every word of your two posts, but I think there are two keys to resolving this:

1. DO turn off Magnetism so that snap of note and clip start times will be unambiguous at all zoom levels.

2. Understand that snap to grid resolution and the duration of inserted notes are two different things. To adjust the latter, bring up the Tools HUD (Heads Up Display) by hitting T or clicking with you middle mouse button/scroll wheel, and choose the duration for inserting new notes there.

I took your advice on Point 1, I swear in the very beginning it produced adverse effects. But reconfiguring it to "Off" now has solved the issue it seems - Thank you! T_T It's been baffling me since my edits, trying to work on the Piano roll, sometimes it worked as I wanted, other times it wasn't. Quite baffling.

As for Point 2, that is definitely clear to me :P I'm not even inserting notes via mouse, it's all Midi Keyboard anyway.

Thanks for your help! :D Back to enjoying working in Sonar!
