MIDI Hardware Difficulty

Hello all

I am new to the forum and after searching the forums to prevent being redundant, I couldn't find anything that applies to my problem.  I apologize in advance if this post comes as a repeat.

I just recently did a little upgrading with my hardware, and I'm having a little trouble interfacing my Midi devices with Sonar.  Note my CPU set-up is a little behind the times as I just got back from Italy and I'm in the process of upgrading and such.  Here is my set-up:

-HP Desktop PC with Windows Vista (32 bit...I know...it's temporary, though)
-Sonar 8 Producer with all the available updates installed
-Audiophile 2496 sound card
-Behringer 1832FX mixer
-Two KRK studio monitors
-Novation Remote 25SL Compact Keyboard
-Akai MPC 2500

Everything in itself works fine; sound works fine with my monitors/sound, Sonar runs well, and the MPC and Keyboard work great via the mixer/sound card.  My problem is trying to get the two MIDI devices to interface with Sonar.  I have the MPC running to the sound card Midi in/out, and the keyboard is running into the MPC's MIDI inputs/outputs.  The actual audio from the two devices are running with RCAs directly to the mixer.  I read online, read the manual for Sonar and the MPC, and I've been able to make Sonar detect the Midi connection, I am just no able to use the devices with Sonar as far as recording and such.  So with that being said, I know the connections are working fine with the sound card and there is no sound issues with either of the instruments.

Is it possible that I do not have the MIDI devices connected properly?  Maybe there is some internal options with the MPC and such that need to be adjusted accordingly.  I was very apprehensive about posting these questions.  Like I said- I've been working on this for some time and I do not want to make a duplicate post.  I know this is somewhat of a broad series of questions, too, so if there is any specific details lacking here please let me know and I will provide them.  Hopefully this will help out some other ignorant folks having the same issue.

Thanks a lot for the help!

    Midi channel issue?

What MIDI channel is the MPC set up to transmit on?

Bill, this subsection of the forum is intended specifically for topics involving Cakewalk's own line of hardware, and not many people follow it. You should feel free to re-post this on the general SONAR forum where it will get more attention.

But you should clarify exactly what your set up is in terms of what hardware/software synth you are trying to drive with the MIDI, how the track routing is set up in the project, and exactly what is and is not working. Can you see the devices in the MIDI Devices dialog? Do you see MIDI activity in the track meters, or in the system tray MIDI I/O indicator?
Also no need to apologize for running a 32-bit Vista platform. Many of us are still running 32-bit XP, as it is about the most stable platform around.

Here is my set-up. I am trying to use this hardware with any/all software components that Sonar 8 Producer 8.3 has. I posted this information along with the original post into the Sonar Producer general forum section. Hope this helps:

My MPC 2500 is running MIDI IN (1) plug into the M audio 2496 MIDI plug in (one of the two wires coming from this sound card), and the MIDI OUT (A) likewise is running into the other MIDI plug in of the 2496.

My novation keyboard is running its MIDI OUT into the MPC's MIDI IN (2), and its MIDI IN into the MPC's MIDI OUT (B).

I believe there are some things I need to do to run the MPC as the slave, and the keyboard as the master, or vice versa. Also, I'm positive that there are some adjustments/settings that need to be changed in Sonar to have the software correlate with the MIDI hardware. Again, apologies for my ignorance. I am very eager to get this hardware running smoothly with Sonar. Hope this info helps. This is a good pic of my sound card (so you can see the MIDI connection into it accordingly):

    Akai MPC 2500

I enjoy making electronic doodads talk to each other, so your question got me thinking...

There's a couple details that would help trouble shoot this...

Can you play the keyboard from the MPC?  Can you play the MPC from the keyboard?

    EDIT
Since you got it right on the keys to MPC and back, I assume you meant to state the parts in bold below...

"My MPC 2500 is running MIDI IN (1) plug into the M audio 2496 MIDI OUT plug in (one of the two wires coming from this sound card), and the MIDI OUT (A) likewise is running into the other MIDI plug IN in of the 2496."

For the keys to play the MPC...

    On the MPC
    01. Select the MIDI/SYNC mode by pressing the [MODE]
key and hitting the [PAD 9] (MIDI / SYNC).
    02. Press the [F1] (MIDI) key.
The MIDI page will be displayed.
    03. Select the Active track receive channel field and select
the MIDI channel from which you wish to receive the data.
If you set this field to ALL, the MPC2500 will receive all channels. If you select any channel from 1 to 15, the MPC2500 will receive only the selected channel.

    Method 1.

Connect the Midi Out from your keyboard to the midi IN on the PC card.  This allows you to input midi notes and commands to sonar.

Connect the midi Out from PC soundcard to the MPC2500 midi IN.
Connect all other sound modules midi IN to the midi Outs on the MPC2500.

You can play your keyboard and hear sounds from the modules.

    Method 2.
Connect MPC2500 midi in/out to PC card.
Connect keyboard midi in to MCP2500 ensuring that midi merge is enabled for midi input 1/2
Connect other midi outs on MPC2500 to other sound modules.

This should let you play keyboard AND use the buttons/controls on the MPC.  Be carefull you don't setup a feedback loop...

Can you not connect the Novation Remote 25SL Compact Keyboard via USB, the user guide infers that you can get MIDI over USB.  This would then show up as a new midi device.

There is of course the chance that I have just missed the point.

Does anyone out there have this problem:  UA-25EX will only playback at 16,24bit 44.1, but not at higher rates.  Audio card profiler recognizes it fine.  Using Windows 7 64 home premium with sonar 8.3.1 32 bit (rewired with Reason 4.1).
