MIDI Interface changes cause VST MIDI ports to get rearranged too

I'm slowly migrating onto a new PC and want to be able to load existing projects, preferably without having to tweak a bunch of stuff.

As has happened in the past, when there was new MIDI hardware, any virtual stuff (e.g. EZ Drummer) got out of kilter until I went back into the MIDI track and pointed them back at the EZDrummer instrument.  (My existing MIDI hardware, a Midisport 8x8, isn't supported under Win7, so I've surrendered and am using a Roland UM3X).

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to "lock" the MIDI tracks feeding a virtual instrument to that instrument's instance so no matter what happens with the MIDI hardware, the virtual instruments' MIDI assignments will be unaffected?  (yes, I'm perfectly willing to accept I'm not doing something properly, but my admittedly quick scan of the forums doesn't reveal a holy-grail type answer to this question).

Thanks,

John

I've never seen track routing to soft synth ports get fouled up by the changing availability of hardware ports, and I don't recall seeing it reported on the forum before, either. Are you sure that's what caused it?
