MIDI Latency...???...never heard of such a thing...(but i think i may have it)

MIDI Latency...???...never heard of such a thing...(but i think i may have it)

hello again...
 
recording the MIDI Output of my Roland TD-9's into SONAR XI...using a 15' MIDI Cable...& am noticing that all of my hits are like 25-30 ticks behind the beat (@ 960 tpm). 

1) I monitor the output of the song in my studio monitors.
 
2) I use tilt-cup phones on the digital drums, w/ 1 cup tilted off my closest ear (so as to be able to hear both signals...monitors & drums
 
is this possible due to cable length...???
 
could it be a lag in signal between daw & speakers...meaning i would play to the beat but would be automatically late due to what i'm hearing...???
 
(i know i'm gettin' old but i'm not that slow or innacurate yet).

also...don't know if anyone would know here...am also posting in v-drum forum...but...recording the performance on the TD-9's to thumb drive...it comes up as a *.td9 file.  shouldn't it be *.mid.  & how does one play or edit a *.td9 file...???

    Have you tried lowering your buffer size in your ASIO driver panel?

    Last time I got the dreaded delay I found that by bypassing all my efx bins that were on audio tracks and master buss,  that it went away instantly.

    i thought buffer size was only relative to audio samples...???...this is MIDI record only
     
    Last time I got the dreaded delay I found that by bypassing all my efx bins that were on audio tracks and master buss,  that it went away instantly
    there's no MIDI output to any synth...it's just plain ol' MIDI record.
     
    how about the v-drum question...the sequences being of a *.td9 file format...???

    I think you will always have this issue as the midi signal can never match the speed at which the sound comes to you directly from the drum module. Set up a drum sampler (ez drummer or whatever) in sonar, and monitor that way while you record the midi. You can adjust for the latency and if you have a decent sound card it should be small.

    TD-9 System Program Version 1.10.......... This system program improves the triggering capability of the TD-9. It will allow more accurate triggering for the cymbals and will reduce crosstalks.     I doubt the 15' cable would be the issue, as I run 20' cables to & from my TD-6 to my MIDI interface, and then USB from there into the computer & back. It must be something else.
