MIDI NOTES/CONTROLLERS AFFECT CONSOLE

Although everything looks right in the preferences, moving the pitch wheel on a MIDI keyboard moves the faders on the console.  MIDI notes flash button lights on the console.  Internal things I can't see may be happening as well.

Ideas on this?

mmmm yeah I remember having seen this before. Are you shure your midi tracks input/outputs are not assingned to the vs console by mistake?

Thanks, but that isn't it.  A senior Sweetwater tech is looking at the system via remote control and we are temporarily baffled.  All the preferences stuff looks OK.

Impossible konradh. I've never seen anyone have so much trouble with the VS700 system. Incorrect midi porting is the only thing that could do that. What are the results of your support contacts with Cakewalk? Sweetwater isn't as technically in the know as Cakewalk's techs are.

Hey, man, I have actually had a dozen other major issues not even documented here and have spent 5 weeks with Sweetwater trying to get all the pieces working.  It all seems to be OK now.  This one was very simple but subtle for someone not used to X1.  Plus my brain is fried.

In this case, VS-700 was top of the list in MIDI devices so every MIDI track defaulted to output to the Console.  The default tracks Cakewalk creates in a blank project did this as well.

Solution: 1-Uncheck the Console in MIDI preferences.  2-Move selected devices to top 3-Reselect Console.  4-Change output of any already-existing tracks to something other than the Console.  Now the default will be to Port A of my M-Audio interface because it is at the top of the list.

Sounds silly and obvious now, but the output box is really small in the lower left and the entire interface is very different from older Sonar.  We tried a dozen exotic things before discovering what a dumb and simple thing was wrong.

Question, though: Why would anyone ever want the console to be the default output for MIDI messages?  Seems like a goofy default.

    Thanks for the moral support.

The Console should be at the top of the list. Your track outputs to the Console were the problem. Not sure what you mean default output. Your situation usually happens when there are other midi drivers being recognized first by Windows and Cakewalk. Turning on the V 700 R and the Console before booting the computer usually stops other drivers from disrupting the proper order. Go into your windows sound menu and make the Fantom VS your default device in the recording tab. You need to also make the V700 R your default device in the playback tab. If you have software for other Midi devices installed windows might being picking them up as the default device. This can cause disruption of your inputs and outputs in your project. Hope you got it sorted out.
