MIDI Snap

In 8.3 and previous versions, you set your snap to say 1/4 and when you grab a note in Piano Roll and move it, it moves in 1/4s.
I cannot get X1 to do this. I have to get it close then Quantize. Cant be the only way, is it ?

Snap has a lot of issues in X1, but this is not one of them that I know of. Try setting Magnetic Strength to High or Off (which is essentially infinite strength) in Preferences.

    Yeah.. its set at 100%..
Maybe i just dont know how to engage it.
My Snap Tool in the control bar is set to SNAP BY and Time Stamp is at 1/4.
With this i assume when i grab a midi note in Piano Roll and move it by holding left mouse, it should move by 1/4s. But it moves free, as if Snap isnt on.
I dont know what to set Absouloute Time too.. maybe thats the problem.

If you don't want it to move freely, then turn Magnetic Strength off. This feature is a bit confusing. Magnetic Strength allows you to move notes freely but also have them snap so that you can do both at the same time. When you get close to a snap value, the note will be pulled there, but you're still allowed to move it freely between snap values.

I think there is a bug here, with the initial setting of Magnetic strength not being respected.

I was just confused by this exact issue, and when I checked Preferences, Magnetic Strength was HIGH. Yet moving MIDI notes with the Smart Tool was not respecting the snap to grid settings.

After going in to Preferences and setting Magnetic Strength to Low; Applying; and then Back To High; Applying, moving MIDI notes in the PRV worked as expected.

Now that I have discovered that double-clicking with the Smart Tool adds new notes in the PRV, MIDI editing in Sonar X1 is almost as usable as 8.5*.

    * Still can't change the pitch of a note without accidently changing the timing unless you hold down SHIFT, unlike 8.5. But with the Snap To Grid working, this is less of an issue.

Magnetic strength is also remembered per project and per Screen Set so if your template has it set to 'high' your project will be set to 'high'. If you set it to 'off' like Scott posted you will get absolute 'Snap' to or 'Snap' By. Way better for my purposes.

Stick, you can also hold down the alt key to enter notes and with 'Snap To' enabled you can drag notes up and down without the Shift key.

There isn't a 100% setting perhaps you mean 'high'. Turn magnetic strength 'off' and see if it doesn't behave any better. And remember that setting is saved 'per project and per Screen Set.

Not sure if this is related to the OPs problem, but might be worth a glance. I believe Midi Landmarks must be enabled for Snap to work as intended in the PRV. (it fixed my issues)
