MIDI Sustain pedal stops MIDI recording/ virtual synth sound
The problem: In both X1 and X2 (x32 and x64), while recording a MIDI track, the notes are displayed properly until I press the sustain pedal; pressing the sustain pedal to sustain a note causes all MIDI data to stop recording (SONAR transport does not stop). Also, any virtual synth stops responding when the sustain pedal is pressed: the physical keyboard works properly with the pedal. SONAR 8.5 does not have this problem: the sustain pedal works as it is supposed to. Did something change with X1/ X2? I have tested this with multiple synths and it is the same behavior, so it appears as if something has gone awry with the X1/X1 MIDI input to SONAR, as if the sustain pedal mapping has been changed. Is it possible to change the event mapping for the sustain? Behavior: If the pedal is pressed after a note is played and held, it will hold the note until another note is played. This behavior will be reflected on playback, so it's recording something; however, no controller events are being displayed in the Piano roll nor the event list. If the pedal is held before a note is played no note will be played. And again, no event will be recorded. Pitch bend, Modulation wheels, X-Y pad, And it seems all other key events are all recorded correctly, just not the sustain. I have tried with both Simple MIDI track and Regular MIDI track with no change. On my MIDI device (M-Audio ProKeys88) with Sustunato and Expression inputs, both work properly: it is only the sustain that seems to have the problem. Again, the sustain pedal works properly on this and the analog recording sounds correct, it is just the MIDI event that is being disruptive. If I recall correctly, I had no problem with X1 behaving like this until after I installed X2. And X2 was installed a couple of days after its release September. I've used a work around for the few times I had to record sustain for a virtual synth (adding the sustain events after recording) for the few times that has been necessary, but it's just annoying now. I've searched the forum (using the search and via Google) but I'm not trying to filter a MIDI event: I seem to want to change the input MIDI mapping for one event.

Hi, It sounds as if something has changed within the Keystation midi configuration. If you do not use the sustain pedal at all, there is no issue correct. My suggestion would be to do a reset (if convenient) of the M-Audio (back to factory defaults) to see if it will then send the expected message or see if you can actually change the sustain programming via the utility that comes with the Keystation. This can also at least show you what that sustain input is set at. Finally there are utilities that can show you the specific midi messages being sent from a device. You can google this funcitionality as this will also tell you what is being sent to the DAW...IHTH...

Have you tried testing the behavior with a standalone synth ... i.e., one that can run outside a host? If the behavior is duplicated there, it at least tells you the problem is not within SONAR.

Better yet try it with MidiOX and you can find out exactly what is being sent when you hit the sustain pedal. Symptoms suggest that you may have inadvertently set up the input device as a control surface or otherwise re-mapped (in Sonar) the message the sustain pedal is sending.

Yes, the ProKeys88 is a stand alone, and the sustain pedal works as expected with that. I have also tested with a Roland synth one of my clients uses. The problem appears to lie with X1 and X2 as the sustain pedal works properly with SONAR 8.5

I downloaded MIDI-OX and it is showing that both the Keystation49e and the ProKeys88 are sending the Pedal Sustain CC correctly. I have a Tranzport set up as a controller, but it is working properly.

So...how does one remap the incoming MIDI data within SONAR? Where is that done? It doesn't appear to be under Preferences>MIDI; I've been looking for how to do that, as I figured that may be the problem, but can't find the information.

I may be way off base here, but it sounds like the sustain pedal may be mapped to some other function also in Sonar. Check in Preferences/ Keyboard Shortcuts and scroll down the list to see if you have the sustain pedal assigned to any function that you may have forgotten you assigned. Also check at the top of that window and make sure you don't have the MIDI Shift set to the sustain pedal. I think that causes something like what you are describing. Hope this helps. If not, you might check any ACT or Generic Control Surfaces you have set up and make sure the sustain pedal is not assigned to another function in there. Good luck Ron

Ron, thank you! That was the answer...somehow. :-) No idea how it got mapped to the shift function, as I didn't consciously do it. It appears that the Sustain pedal was showing in the MIDI 'Shift' Options. So when I changed the Controller pulldown to 68, I can now use the sustain pedal correctly. Good call! So others know how I fixed it: 1. Press 'p' or open the preference dialog 2. In the lower left of the dialog box, select the "Advanced" button 3. Navigate to "Customization>Keyboard Shortcuts" 4. In the upper right of the 'Keyboards' Shortcuts' is a section labelled "MIDI 'Shift' Options" 5. In the "Controller" Pulldown menu, choose an unused MIDI controller message

Oscar, glad you got it fixed. It may have been something you tried in a previous version and got imported when you installed X2 or maybe you just clicked by mistake. I knew my bumbling around and making all sorts of mistake in Sonar might come in handy one day . :)
