MIDI confusion

1) Nektar Impact LX 49 to Sonar Platinum, hosting Garritan Instant Orchestra

Problem: I'm only getting 1 midi channel - I verified settings on Nektar, and I've tried to select every channel in preferences>MIDI>instruments, but when I do, the list reverts back to only channel 1.

Nektar says it'll play every channel Sonar tells it to, and Garritan points outthat I'm only getting one channel (when I set the voices in Garritan to OMNI or channel 1, I get them )

Solution:_______

2) Music written in Finale 2012, saved as MIDI type 1, and then imported to Sonar. Sonar opens the tracks using Aria player, and all the data and tracks are there.

The problem: no sound. The output is showing my controller, Impact LX 49 in each channel. I tried all other output choices. There is no choice to send it to the master, which is available in all my virtual instrument recordings.

Solution____________

thanks in advance for your expertise. the manual and Garrigus book have been my boon companions for most of the day.

Your MIDI controller is only sending one channel out (most likely), so you need to have one MIDI track for each channel to be received in a soft synth (not required, but easiest for input and editing purposes). At the top left of the Track View, there is a drop down (defaults to "Custom") which should be set to "All." This will allow you to see inputs/outputs of MIDI tracks and the soft synth (will need to either expand the track left pane and/or track height to see these). I am not familiar with Garritan's PLayer, so not sure how that works internally, but if each MIDI track is assigned a channel and output to Garritan, the rest should occur inside Garritan itself (I am assuming).

For the second question, the easiest solution is to go into preferences and disable ALL MIDI outputs. MIDI is only note data (no sound) so you need a soft synth to hear it. With no MIDI output assigned, if you right click a MIDI file and "Open With" SONAR Platinum, SONAR will automatically insert and route the TTS-1 (basic 16 channel synth) for you (and map the patches to the "closest" match for the MIDI file).

ASUS ROG Maximus X Hero (Wi-Fi AC), i7-8700k, 16GB RAM, GTX-1070Ti, Win 10 Pro, Saffire PRO 24 DSP, A-300 PRO, plus numerous gadgets and gizmos that make or manipulate sound in some way.
