MIDI control of automatable effects

Hi, is it possible to control effect parameters using an external midi controller? I know it's possible to create an envelope and then reassign it to an effect parameter, but that isn't really satisfactory, as you can't hear the effect you're having!
Any ideas?

Cheers,
Mark

PS Can someone point me to any technical data/documents outlineing the differences between WDM and ASIO drivers. I want to understand why each one works the way it does!

As to the MIDI question the answer is yes. But it depends on the thing you wish to control. Most plugins and synths can be controlled but others can't. For a good example take the Moog Modular V. It will alow you to control just about every aspect of it. There is a lot to control too. Others just can't. All of the new plugs that come with Sonar can be controlled this way.

For the other question I would run a search on this forum and see what comes up. I know that a lot has been said about both here. For tech docs try MIcrosoft for WDM and Steinberg for ASIO.

Just to add to what John says, as a general rule you should find that any FX parameter to which you can assign an envelope can also be controlled using an external MIDI controller.

Ok, so after doing a quick search (can't believe I didn't do that first! Sorry guys!), to answer my own question, you can automate effect parameters in producer edition only (unless the plug in has midi control built in), using the FX parameter view in the track inspector or console view.
MAybe I won't be quite so hasty to post next time!
