What sound card and driver mode are you using? You may not have a hardware synth to use, so you won't have any valid MIDI outputs to choose from. Not to worry.
Do tutorial #8 on using softsynths. The Edirol VSC(which comes with MC3) is a softsynth that gives you better sound than the integrated hardware synth would. You don't need a MIDI output when you use a softsynth. it sends its output directly to audio.
