MIDI drum track, Studio Instruments Drums, to separate tracks. CAL not working?
Good day everyone, After not touching an instrument seriously for about 28 years I am back with a vengeance. Guitars are restrung and restored, amps dusted off, and I pulled out the old Tascam Porta Two. Just kidding, I downloaded Sonar Professional. This is my first post after using this application for about a week. I apologize if the answer is somewhere out there. I searched and didn't find anything really definitive that addresses my particular problem. I followed tips and tutorials and I think I am doing it right. I am a computer guy by trade so programatically I think I am understanding how to use this wonderful software. HOWEVER, as stated in the subject line I am unable to move my drum track to separate. I have tried every combination of the "Notes to track" CAL that I could muster, changing ports, sources and destination tracks. Let me try and summarize what happens. Scenario:- I only have one track which is:
- SI-Drums
- Using Midi channel 10
- Scarlett 2i2 as my one and only soundcard in the machine
- uses standard ASIO driver that comes with the Scarlett device.
- I have several pieces/note tracks in my midi track (Sorry, not perfect with the terminology yet.)
- kick drum
- snarehi hat closed and open
- cymbals.
The worst that happens is when I kick off the CAL and put in some info, source/destination/channel, etc., it does nothing at all. The best is that it creates all the tracks I would expect, count-wise, but they are all empty tracks. The best it has behaved is when I choose - Source Track: 1
- First destination track: 2 (remember there is only one track in this composition.)
- Destination channel: 10 (Where my drum track lives in the cakewalk MIDI rack)
- Destination port: Default (I do not recall what the default is but if I pick anything else it gives me an error that I cannot recall.)
Is this how people normally break up MIDI drums or is there another way to do it? I think I can copy them out manually in different tracks but would rather automate it if possible. Thanks so much for ANY advice related to this topic, Mark

There is pro and cons to using separate tracks from midi drums. I find it best to leave them together so I can edit. If what your after is multiple outputs so you can apply audio processing then most VST drums have both built in mixers with a lot of processing and/or the option to insert the synth with multi channel output. Adictive drums is an example of a VST with very extensive processing and effects all built in to the GUI. Air Strike 2 is another one. SI drums is very basic and my last choice if I needed a VST drum. Even Session drummer is a step up but it has no processing available. But you can multi output and apply processing to the audio output tracks. But back to your question. In PVR view if you click on the piano notes to the left it will highlight all those notes in the track. You can then copy( or cut) paste to a new midi track.

I do not believe splitting notes per track is as common as it was years ago. That said, the script works as well as ever for me. I only run the script when testing for threads like this one. Do not use instrument tracks when using CAL scripts that rely on track count like "Split Note to Tracks.cal" When testing I like to place the track to split at the bottom of the project. Then - Set the source track to that track,
- Set the first destination track to the last track +1
- Default the rest of the inputs. It does not matter what channel is used but setting it to 10 should be OK. Every drum soft synths I have will play on any channel.

This is the one odd thing about Strike 2, It uses channels for different set ups, Like if you wish to use GM assignments you have to use Ch 2.

Odd indeed that a plug-in would require GM drums to be other than channel 10 when using channels in that way. Still nothing in SONAR requires channel 10, even TTS-1 though it does default channel 10 because it is GM.

Yes it was one of those VST's where I had to read the manual to get even a sound out of it :)
I use to use the CAL script for years and years but found mixed results sometimes so switched to my method described above when someone here described it a light bulb went on,, takes longer but at least it's solid.

Thank you for the replies everyone. It sounds like for now, to move forward, I will take a look at the old "copy/paste" method since we know that will work. Just musing out loud, I wonder if adding instr tracks and deleting them created placeholders for them that is confusing the CAL script. (No need to answer, again just thinking out loud.) In the meantime I am going go search for some docs on how to write a CAL. It didn't dawn on me until I read these replies that I could probably just write one to do what I want, given the right functionality. Again, thank you everyone. Cool forums:) -Mark

For the record - Just a quick update. I tried the explicit directions here to get the CAL working after I upgraded to a non-trial Sonar Pro version. It still doesn't work. I tried creating a new composition and made one midi track with just drums per scook: - Set the source track to that track,
- Set the first destination track to the last track +1
- Default the rest of the inputs. It does not matter what channel is used but setting it to 10 should be OK. Every drum soft synths I have will play on any channel.
This did nothing at all. It hung up the CPU for about 10 seconds then just returned to the application with nochanges made. I downloaded AD2 and grabbed the "Heavy" kit. Yeah, these are some NICE drums! Thanks Cactus Music! I am now working through understanding AD2 setup and usage. I think this makes my need for breaking SI Drums into tracks a moot point actually. Thanks again everyone!

The last time I used the CAL it worked for me (but that had to be 10 years ago), so not much help. Jim PS - I program all my drum tracks using a variant of iMAP... I do put all my toms in the same MIDI track and separate the kick, snare and high hats into their own midi tracks. Then I put all cymbals into one midi track as well. So, I have 5 midi tracks for my drum parts. If I use any percussion, each percussion piece goes into its own MIDI track. I find this very useful in both creating and fine tuning the drum MIDI tracks.
