MIDI key display?

Is there a way of displaying what MIDI key is being pressed? I only have 40 keys on my controller (story of my life :) so I have to keep using the octave button. That's usually fine but sometimes vsts have different reference points, sometimes I don't want to change the articulation by accidentally pressing a keyswitch key, and sometimes it would help when creating MIDI drum files, particularly when hits are way off the staff.
