MIDI notes not triggering every sound! (Its happening again)

Ok this has happened for several projects for me today...

Projects I have already started I open and when I play back for some reason, and it's quite obvious, I hear Sonar X1b missing certain MIDI notes....

I don't understand why, I don't know what's causing it, it wasn't like this before.. is this happening to anyone else?

wind, is there a MIDI buffer setting that might help? Also check to see if the notes got doubled somehow. Had this happen to me. There's a CAL script that will get rid of them if that's the case.

Yeah but I think 'b' might have reset a couple of settings. Worth a look, if you haven't already. So did you get it fixed? Were there double notes?

Are you sure that the 'missing' notes have a reasonable velocity?

Are they all assigned to the same Midi channel?

Are the notes within the normal range of whatever synth it is your driving?

Are they contained within a muted clip?

Is there an automated Fx on the clip/track which could cause this?

Do you have any track layers enabled? This can, and has caused problems in the past.

Start by eliminating the obvious, then whatever's left MUST be the cause.

I think that whenever I have had missing MIDI notes it was usually fixed by tweaking the buffer sizes. Not just MIDI buffers but all of the buffers. These are shown under Driver settings and "Mixing latency" in X1 preferences. I didn't notice any differences with X1b, but have a look to check that your buffer settings look right. Try tweaking them, both up and down.  With one of my old sound cards if I increased my audio buffer size it caused less audio dropouts (as expected) but some MIDI notes dropped out (seemed fairly random).

I can confirm that this has happen to me ,  and that bounceing to audio was the only work around. Which I can't do..
Not a happy camper anymore!!! :( still unable to save, after new Hard drive and clean install..
I lose playback sound of midi notes, Pro channel on and off buttons don't save correct. Asio drivers dont work.. Failed to save, out of memory, Runtime error,  cannot bounce.  And no workaround . I guess my only choice is wait till September , and pay for X2 and hope.. There's absoultely nothing more I can do..I just spent $900 trying to get x1 working, Between new audio device ,$600, W7 $150, new SSD $130. I feel into the trap again. I really guess I have to move on now. After 8 versions of Sonar I have to say goodbye. Returning my Roland Octo capture today as that made no difference at all. I can use the $600 to buy cubase, Thank you all ...

Hi, I posted above that this problem wasn't happening to my knowledge in X1a and that things were working before. I've tried increasing latency to 1000+ samples, doesn't help

Hi djjhart, I feel your pain. There are few things that get me upset in this world. A computer or computer program screwing up is one of them. I have to admit, with this recent version of Sonar I've been considering alternatives as well... for the time being though I will have to wait it out (can't afford to switch, I just bought the Fabfilter Total Bundle). Hope Cubase works out for you

I just got off the phone with support.. And all my aggravation ends up not being anything related to my computer or hardware.. Its a problem with Sonar, which they will fix in the upcoming release.. When will that be NO clue.. It looks as if it will be in a paid upgrade when x2 comes out.. I had sent them the dump file and they have narrowed it down to groove clips . Meaning a work around would have to be bouncing down the groove clips. I had tried this yesterday and when I went to save crash..
The midi notes not playing I was told to adjust the play back buffer.  But really doesn't make any difference to me as I still am not able to save.. With no word as to when and if x1c will be release, I'm sooo stuck really wish Cakewalk would change the way they work on getting us fixes , A hot fix is possible as we all know.. So why not fix this. Along with the preview to host tempo, the pro channel and what ever else is stopping people from using X.. I really dont want to spend $600 and have to learn another Daw.  In the end there was nothing wrong with my Setup!  3 years in a row I have gone through some pain with getting Sonar's new versions to work..

    This is really frustrating...

This problem not only is in playback with in Sonar, but persists when exporting audio!!

I have to freeze or bounce every track in X1 before I go to export.... this ridiculous...

I will have to see if this problem is exclusive to projects started in X1a, I'm hoping projects started in X1b won't have this problem

Re:MIDI notes not triggering every sound! 2011/04/01 17:51:18 (permalink)
    ...happening the same here...

I have a project started in SONAR 8.5, it always worked fine....

    ...until I installed X1....

...many midi notes, during playback, are now "muted"....

...the strange thing is there are clips in which they (the notes) happen to play, while in some of their repetitons (same clips but placed at different stages in the timeline) they DON'T....!

What's more, the same happens now even in v8.5......

The project worked fine up to 8.5.3, I'm sure because I've been working on it intensely...
...as I'm sure the issue came out right after upgrading to X1, which leads me to think that X1's installation must have brought something broken which affects all SONAR versions installed on the system........

...If that's the case, X1 seems to have been able to ruin even 8.5...

    ...that adds MORE frustration........!

Now, a quick (very quick), urgent FIX is the least Cakewalk ought to do....

Mates, believe me, months ago I never thougth I would come to say it, but now I'm afraid I'm getting really, REALLY tired of X1....

...which makes me sad and mad....

wind, did you call the tech guys about your problem? Just trying to understand it a little better. You and gothic and djj are having MIDI notes not playing? Like I said I had that happen when I got some double notes but never seen it since and are there tons of others with the same problem? I mean it sucks but I'd sure like to know more so I can avoid it at least.

I've got whole tunes with lots of MIDI tracks and I'm not missing any notes. Are you missing them using Dimension? Keep in mind the samples in Dimension don't run the full range of the keyboard.

It was happening with Battery 3, Rapture and Omnisphere I think... I will check right now for double notes, pretty sure that's not the case though.

Edit: oh it happened with in Kontakt 4 too

    It's been happening again today

From a fresh boot.. it didn't happen until I started tweaking (incl. removing and adding FX plugins)

A boot seems to fix whatever the problem is I've got my latency cranked to full... this sucks

This is pretty much what I thought when you found that a restart cleared up the symptoms.

I figured if that is the case then you will likely experience these problems each session until the cause of the problem is found.

    Good Luck.

    best regards,

I think HumbleNoise was on the right track in post #2. The most common cause of dropped MIDI notes is the Prepare Using buffer being too low in Preferences > MIDI > Playback and Recording.

Start at 500 if it's lower than that, and increase in increments of 100 up to maybe 1000 if necessary. Also note that increasing you latency (either buy having a larger buffer, or by using plugs that require PDC will tend to make this problem worse, not better, requiring an even larger MIDI bufffer.

That said, I think X1b might have some new issues with this. I was looping some MIDI the other day, and noticed that when I disabled looping on the fly, it would not play the first measure and half after the loop point was passed. This was with hardware synths. I need to experiment a little more, and do some comparison to 8.5.3 before filing a problem report.

I think Cakewalk need to look into this implementation of MIDI buffering, and consider re-architecting it. I don't know of any other DAW that requires you to adjust a buffer for this, or that has so many issues with MIDI "dropouts".

    Gentlemen,

Is this "effect" still happening ? Here is my take:

    All Audio files play fine

    Export seems OK

Larger midi files with heavy strings, horns, and pads (Make Me Smile, Since I Fell For You) will drop out at different times each time they are played in X1b+Quickfix build 255. 255 was tried when I first experienced this.

These same files play fine in 8.5.3

99% of my midi files play OK but I haven't checked them all.

My gig 'puter is 8.5.3 (and will STAY that way) so it is not too big a deal but it is as annoying as a freaking pimple.

Ck'd in CONSOLE view to check the meters and when the drop outs occur, the meters fall to zero = no sound = DUH !

Haven't had this much BS from an upgrade since CakeWin 8 LOL.

No clue and not enough time to investigate, gotta eat and pay bills LOL.

AMD dual-core FX-62, Win XP SP3, TTS SoftSynth only, nothing exotic. CPU and HDD use almost always < 10 %.

And your MIDI Prepare Using buffer is set to...?

I think part of the problem here is that X1 defaulted to 250ms where earlier versions defaulted to 500. 500 works for most environments. 250 does not work for many, including mine. The magic number below which I start having trouble is 259.

I haven't noticed any change from build to build of X1, but different Hardware/Synths/Projects seem to have different sensitivity to this setting, so it could be something changed with build 255 that pushed some over the threshold.

Tried messing with the buffers a bit with no change, then noticed the latency slider was set to 100 mS x 4 buffers = 400 mS. Set that way lower to 5 mS x 4 buffers = 20 mSec and that seemed to take care of it. Don't recall on what night of adult beverage consumption I ever set it that high but whatever works.
    Thanks for the reply.

It was happening with Battery 3, Rapture and Omnisphere I think... I will check right now for double notes, pretty sure that's not the case though.

Edit: oh it happened with in Kontakt 4 too

Have you solved this problem by any chances? Does the reboot always take care of the issue?
I tried every possible buffer and still get the issue... (with Kontakt 4)

Long post on this forum about MIDI and VIs not working started under konradh.  Lots of info there.

Note that Cakewalk advises setting the MIDI buffer to 700 ms instead of the default 250.

My work-around is to hit the panic button (all notes off button) that looks like a MIDI plug.  My theory is that X1 is not releasing notes.
