MIDI question: Assigning midi channel to tracks
Hi everyone, I'm brand new to Cakewalk, and brand new to MIDI/Audio software, but have many years experience with MIDI and audio itself. I've been reading and reading the tutorials, and scouring the software settings, etc., but cannot find one simple thing: How to assign MIDI channels to each track. I'm able to record a drum track. Then I record a bass track. But on playback, both tracks are bass. Where oh where is the setting to make it work right? Thanks in advance for your help

Welcome to the forum.
That's taken care of automatically when you use the "insert soft synth" dialog.
Othewise, you route the MIDI tracks output to a soft synth, not to an audio track, and the input of the audio track is set to the soft synth in question.
In other situations, take care of that each instrument has its dedicated MIDI channel.
What soft synths are you talking about?
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

Welcome.
Expand the MIDI track pane to see it's properties. There you can set channel, bank and patch.
To see everything, you may have to click the boxes-within-a-box icon above the track panes.

Hey, thanks for the replies everyone. I haven't had time to get back to working with MC since I posted, but will have a chance later today or tomorrow. I'll post back with the results. :)

Believe it or not I haven't gotten around to doing anything until now. I was able to figure out how to change MIDI channels, thanks to a couple of the responses here. :) Guitarhacker

This was very informative and helpful, thank you! My next mystery is how to create tracks and hear the sounds of my keyboard, not the ones within MC. I'm using a Roland RD-800 keyboard, and though I can get it to control the software, I'm not hearing the RD-800 sounds. Any suggestions, or should I open this question in a new thread?

Have you imported the instrument definition file for your keyboard?
Very easy to do - much easier than old versions of MC.
Can't talk you thro it right now as I'm not on my DAW but I found it easily enough.

Okay, I've managed to import the .ins file, once I Googled forever to find out what that's all about, LOL. Now I am hearing my keyboard sounds. Awesome. Basically my questions in this thread have been answered and resolved. Now to open a new thread or two with other concerns. :)
This is much, much different from my old Roland MC50mkII sequencer.
