MIDI to Audio

When converting MIDI to audio, is it best not to touch the volume levels because it was already mixed in MIDI, or should you turn each one up to max (without peaking) when recording MIDI to audio, and remix it later in audio. I hope this question makes sense.

Cheers

Personally, I would turn each one up to max, record, and then remix. I would have thought it would be best to get the best possible signal level for your audio; not only is it easier to decrease volume (rather than increase volume), you also get less background noise/hiss.

Thanks, I figured that would be the best way, but I hate having to reset the levels, I guess I should get used to it.
    Thanks again

It depends on your the level of midi sound source. For me I mixed it in midi but the exported wave could be too hot or too soft. So I check the level of the exported wave and adjust the volume in Sonar to get the hottest signal without cliping and export it again. I only need to do it initially, since now I know the level of my device.
