MIDI track > Edit Filter > Automation > Volume - ??? MIDI envelope not working?

I followed the directions to create a MIDI envelope on a MIDI track, to use the notes on some parts of the track and mute other sections.  I created and edited a volume envelope just as I have done on audio tracks, but it's not working.  All the notes remain audible, as if the envelope doesn't exist.

All the MIDI notes on the track came from MIDI channel 2, but when I select Edit Filter > Automation > MIDI and change the default channel to Channel 2, I get an error message: "An envelope already exists for the specified message type."

If I right click on the envelope, select "Assign Envelope" from the dropdown list, select "Volume (default Ch. 1)", then select MIDI from the dropdown list and change the default channel to 2, it does it, but it also reverts to "Controller 0 - Ch. 2" instead of "Volume."  Through all of these gyrations, the MIDI instrument (Dim Pro) continues to sound out every note in the sections of the envelope set to 0 (velocity or volume), regardless of what channel is selected for the envelope.

I've tried every setting, and can't seem to figure out how to make the MIDI (track) envelope feature work...

FYI, I'm on X1 Producer Expanded (X1d)

FYI, I know there are other ways to achieve this, for instance:
 - put the envelope on the instrument track
 - highlight and mute the individual, unwanted notes in PRV
However, I'd like to know how to use the MIDI track envelope feature, because sometimes that would be an easier procedure.

Can anyone say whether MIDI track envelope works in X2?

Haven't tried it, but you can achieve exactly the same thing with an envelope on your Audio track - and this does work!

Plus you don't have to fiddle around with Midi channels or anything like that.

However, I'd like to know how to use the MIDI track envelope feature, because sometimes that would be an easier procedure.

Er, it's not an easier procedure in your case.........

There was a bug with X1 that new MIDI envelopes would not have any effect until re-assigned to the desired controller (I would hope, but haven't verified, that it's been fixed in X2). But re-assigning should take care of it. There was also a problem with MIDI envelopes not working when rendering audio with fast-bounce disabled, but that doesn't seem applicable here.

Just to be clear, are you wanting to use a Volume envelope (CC7) or a Velocity Offset envelope (not really a MIDI controller)?

EDIT: For reference, I just verified new MIDI Volume and Clip Velocity envelopes are working in X2 without reassignment.

in the track inspector for the midi track in question, click on channel (under the fx bin) and select 2 (or 1 or 12 or anything from what i can tell) and that will force the envelope.

Thanks swamptooth, that works!

To clarify, one does not have to mess around with changing the ("default") channel on the envelope, just select the type of automation you want (Volume in my case), then follow the directions in swamptooth's message above to select the correct MIDI channel in the track inspector.

Er, it's not an easier procedure in your case.........
Just to clarify, in this project, I have multiple MIDI tracks routed to the same instrument track, so an envelope on one of those MIDI tracks was what I was wanting.

See swamptooth's response below for the solution.

Cheers
