MIDI translation before messages reach Sonar

I tried this a while ago and failed but would like to pursue this again, so I ask for ideas / suggestions :-)

Is there a simple, reliable and affordable MIDI tool out there which could do MIDI translation before messages reach Sonar?

I would like to translate two button press actions on a MIDI controller (e.g. ALT + TRACK i.e. a combination without any pre-defined action) which actually result in 4 MIDI message (first ALT key on and off, then TRACK key on and off) into one MIDI message (or key stroke combination) which I could use for key bindings of available Sonar actions.

I tried BOME MIDI translator and could sort of get it to work for one button combination, but found it awefully complicated and not maintainable in a complex setup. Is there anything else I ould try?

I actually put a feature request up for discussion (http://forum.cakewalk.com/FindPost/3181813) but I'm afraid not many will care about such specific functionality ...

MIDI to Action mapping is what Control Surface plug-ins are for. My plug-in allows the operations you want. You can define any key combinations and trigger all possible actions. You can also define unusual actions, not directly existing in SONAR (for example, "Go to marker 'Chorus'"), define fancy logic for key combinations (for example "Shift" by itself is "CapsLock", but when some other control was touch before "Shift" was release, it is just a "Shift"). I can continue the whole day long what else you can do with it... but I'm afraid not many users are really interested in Control Surface related topics, except "it does not work out of the box" one.

    Hi azslow,

I've been following your posts, but until now only had quick glances at your site. Now I did more reading and think it is pretty impressive what you are trying to accomplish and if you have enough endurance to get this to a rock solid state, Sonar users with all sorts of controllers will love you :-)

Now back to my original post: I definitely want to continue using the vs-700 as it works now (as I'm very happy with it); I would only like some additional key press combinations on the surface to trigger currently unmapped actions, which means the vs-700 has to remain connected using the official controller set-up that came with Sonar ...

So could I use/configure your plug-in in conjuction with the vs-700 plug-in (both would be listening to the same MIDI port), the vs-700 should respond as usual and only the superfluous MIDI messages that the vs-700 does not understand/respond can be processed by your plug???
