MITM Clips: Dissecting Toto’s “Rosanna”

A 5 min show where you can listen to TOTO's Rosanna track by track. The moment when you don't have to "fix it in the mix":

http://thesoundla.com/2016/02/dissecting-totos-rosanna/

They say the keyboard part is played by Steve Porcaro but it is doubled by both Steve and David Paich, right?

I have always liked bands who get piano into rock music, and Toto is high on the list. I cannot speak to any of the involvement with the musicians, but learned something new listening. I never realized that "Toto was involved in every track on Michael Jackson's 'Thriller' album" before. I found that incredibly interesting.

Hey, THANKS!  BEAUTIFUL work done by these guys, on an incredible song with really tight playing, with killer vocals.

I often to this day crank up my keyboards and get to grooving on that ending jam with drums, bass, piano, and Steve Lukather on that G groove.

I took the liberty of sharing that clip on my Face Book page, as I have a lot of musician friends that will also really like that video too.

    So THANKS!

It's actually a little depressing, just how good each one of those tracks is on its own. I'd call it a good day to just be able to nail that awesome kick.

The lack of Autotune is sure refreshing.

Also worth a listen is the link on that page to Nile Rodgers' and Lady Gaga's tribute to David Bowie. She's not the singer Bowie was, but there is a certain physical resemblance. I assume it was Mr. Rodgers who arranged that medley.

Toto songs just send shivers down my spine due to how utterly brilliant they are. It's not even the kind of music I would listen to often, but whenever I hear them I'm always blown away by their songwriting and musicianship. Rosanna is an absolute pop classic, love the "Home At Last" style double time shuffle in it. Such incredible drumming. AND DAT BASS!

Oh and I can't be the only one who would love to get his hands on that vocal track to play around with a remix of it. I'm thinking something really sparse to bring out those spine tingling bass harmonies....it was almost a shame to bury those in the mix, just stunning.

I recall one of the TOTO guys indicating that the keyboard bends in the solo section, where entire chords bend, couldn't be done live at the time, so they set different pitch bends and did each note of the chords separately.

Toto is FULL of talent.  That is where the music starts.  If you have the talent, this translates into good groove which can be recorded and mixed easier.
Steve Lukather did a live concert with Larry Carlton and the playing on that is incredible.
Jeff Porcaro remains one of my favorite drummers (May he rest in peace).  His talent level is WAY above mine and I am awe struck at how easy he makes it seem.  Google and watch him break down how he came up with and played Rosanna on You Tube.

That video is quite interesting (I just looked that up). He makes something fairly intricate seem effortless. (The first 8 seconds of that video are dark.)

If those Rossanna stems didn't totally ruin your day, these might:

    Vocals only from Abbey Road:

One more interesting bit...this one's Randy Bachman explaining how to play the opening chord in "A Hard Day's Night", which has been a mystery to many a guitarist.
