MODS - Is CraigB really BANNED?
Craig banned?! Really??? I can hardly imagine anyone here less likely to say something which could cause them to be banned...

No way. That can't be right. Maybe it's got something to do with the spammers.

I know he had several "how to kick the spammers out quickly" posts in several forums. Now I only see 1. I wonder if the spammers marked him as spam using his instructions on how to do that?

Good point, Greg. Hopefully, the mods will sort it out then. Who knows? Maybe he did it himself to see if it would work.

He 'd himself... I knew he liked Kraftwerk, but that much? I'll add something to this thread's title - maybe we'll get a mod's attention and they can look into it...

Well if anyone who can get an account can flag anyone who has an account for spam and get the thread stopped, and if anyone can get an account, it is only a matter of time before the spammers can the spam sheriff. That is a good argument for having moderators be the only people who can moderate.

A good argument for rolling your own forum software. Doing so may not be for the faint of heart, but neither are these canned solutions. Far too many things (like this) can go wrong.

No doubt Craig will be restored once they realise what's happened. I knew the 'spam' disappeared after three flags, but does anyone know if this leads to an automatically triggered ban, or whether there still has to be a moderator who manually pulls the plug on the offender? If it's automated in some way, then it can lead, as I'm guessing must be the case here, to abuse. As James mentions, it's most likely spammers' revenge after they spotted Craig's worthwhile crusade. This is again mere conjecture, but however much automation is involved in this process, then I'd suggest it's gone a tad too far if guys like Craig can end up banned. I think I'd prefer the old approach whereas no posts are zapped and nobody is banned. Posts could still be flagged as spam but that would only trigger a notification to our hosts; it obviously means more work for the moderators, and the 'real' spam might linger a little longer, but it would prevent abuse of the system. So, is Mesh now known as the Unbander? Unbandeder? Unibander? Ok. Now I'm thinking of a band of unicorns. On the positive side, someone else must have just said something smart. (...thus bringing balance to the stupidity.)

Mesh is getting away with highway spammary in the FSF, but no Juan knows it......and Mesh likes to keep it like that. (why is Mesh talking in the third person?? not even Mesh knows why.....).

Yes, if a post gets 3 flags, it seems the OP is automatically banned, and an 'approval pending' message appears. It occurs to me that if it was spammers that flagged Craig's post, three of them would have had to sign up together to do it, as you can't flag a post more than once.

According to Ryan's post, it wasn't the spammers that did this to Craig......

Yeah from what he said it does appear that he knows who was doing the flagging, and that they were established members who "should know better"....I'd like to think those people are hanging their heads and tracing humble figure 8's with their toes right now!

Bail has been paid - I'm FREEEEEE! (Well, maybe not "free" but cheap certainly.) Actually, I was able to get out of the banned by saying I was a drummer with some really cool new song ideas. I was off working in a friend's shop all day yesterday and didn't get home until around 12:45am. That's when I saw the email. Apparently "someone" (who the Mods say they will be dealing with - which tells me they can see who flags spam, something I like) thought it was funny to flag one of my posts. Now I know we can ban a spammer just by flagging his spam three times - another thing I think is a good thing. As I had mentioned in my spam topics, the threads don't get deleted, but end up being held for approval (which mine was so my "auto-ban" was lifted). I think the Mods could do two things to make the whole process better: 1) Make their own sticky note in each forum so people will know what to do (and include a "no abuse" clause in there), and 2) Make it so you have to have a certain number of posts before you can flag something as spam like they do with posting links. Thanks for all the support! Now, where's my coffee and becan?
