MOTO Ultralite
upgraded to MOTU version 1.2... having real tough time upgrading to 1.5 can somebody who uses this pls give the basics.. have been using but feel like I need to go back to step 1... using ASIO drivers let's say I'm using the FRONT IN on ULTRALITE, what I'm looking to do is record a mono guitar/vocal right down the middle.. 1) does it matter if I have stero or mono marked in MOTU cuemix 2) what corresponds to the front input?? LEFT MOTU Audio Analog 1, or RIGHT MOTU Analog 1, Stereo?? 3) what corresponds to the rear input?? I will get a track perfect.. for instance. MOTU Analog 3-4 solo on stereo Button SONAR track armed with blue INTERLEAVE buttons on both Track Inspector and Monitor everything works find.. analog mono signal right down the middle to both left and right channels.. do it a gain it doesn't work.. fuss with the Interleave.. un-arm the track. Get a signal coming thru the channel on both signal lines. hit record and no RED LINE.. shut down do it again and it works fine.. it's driving me insane. I have got it working, made myself screenprints. It's being realllly fussy. would the MOTU Utlra/MK Firewire 1.5 upgrade help would the sonar 1A and 1B upgrades help

update.... per MOTU you can control the MOTU front and back main inputs just by using the TRIM and plugging in.. my signal IS getting into SONAR, because I do see the meters lighting up.. somehow I need to tell Sonar to just record a mono signal down the middle.. sometimes I get 2 left right signals, sometimes I hit record and nothing nothing records.. it sounds like the issues are in Sonar.. I'm using ASIO drivers. The MOTU is handling the MIDI just fine.

the front input is the LEFT MOTU Analog Audio 1. you don't need to do anything in sonar to tell it to record mono - just select ONLY the LEFT channel for one track and whichever one you have the guitar plugged into for the other track. don't mess with the interleave - it's set automatically according to the input you select. don't select a stereo input and it won't set the interleave to stereo, it will select a MONO interleave for you. if you DO select a stereo input then sonar will set the interleave to stereo. don't mess with it - just select the correct input! your question about what the rear "one" is? there are 7 inputs on the rear - which one are you talking about?

"rear" input I'm referring to is the the XLR/Combo jack on the back which is parallel to the front input..one of the 2, main inputs on the unit. would the rea input be RIGHT MOTU ANALOG 1 ?? (not at my machine right now)

thanks for the help... to sum this up for future idiots like myself... MOTU ULTRALITE & CAKEWALK SONAR 1) don't mess with the CueMix.. you may want to restore to default if you have if you plug into the front XLR/Hybrid input in the front, you choose Left MOTU Audio ASIO Analog 1, if you use the rear input, you choose Right MOTU Audio ASIO Analog 1 The left Trim/48V/PAD controls you gain and trim on the front input the Right Trim/48V/PAD controls the gain and trim on the rear input this will give you a mono signal for your mic/guitar righ down the middle of the track channel, which you can then pan or straight-line into your mix.

you don't have to use cuemix if you don't want to, no. I do use it myself to add a tad of compression going in on vocals and I use it to turn phantom power on and off, althought that can also be done easily enough on the ultralite knobs as well. the rest is correct! I really like my Ultralite! the only thing I wish it had was ADAT. it's supposed to be able to daisy chain using firewire and I Haven't had the opportunity to try that yet, but I know there will be a time in my near future that I need more than 8 analog inputs and I would like to be able to use another unit. ADAT would be perfect, but hopefully the firewire daisy chain will work!

greenstrat: To add to the great help these users have given, you may want to watch that video on CueMix FX at the MOTU site. It's great for learning some basics of how to use CueMix FX. You don't say which UltraLite you have, but I guess it's the newest model, the UltraLite-mk3 Hybird.

I thought he meant updating the firmware which the newest one, the MKIII, doesn't have any updates to the firmware yet.
