MOTU 828 MKII - Anyone using it?

Hi There,

I recently bought a MOTU 828 MKII, and am looking for some more best practices, tips, tutorials, or even forums that might have more information then what is found in the Manual.... Is there anyone out there that in the future I can bounce some question off of if I run into trouble? Or are there any good sites dedicated to the Motu 828 MK2 users for support?

Since you have been using the interface, what is your impression of it? Overall likes, overall dislikes? Driver issues? Anything to share?

I'm using an 828mkII daisy-chained with an 896. It's been fantastic since day one. Really not too many tricks to report - just dial in the driver/buffer combo that works best with your setup and then just forget about it!

I'm using the WDM drivers with buffer size at 128. Getting about 2.9ms latency - plenty good for my needs!

I just got one for my van. it's great, but I can't hear midi from Sonar through it. Also, what is the difference between ASIO and WDM? cuz I can use both.

i love my 828 mkII. lots of ins and outs... firewire... reasonable mic pre's... my only gripe is that the knobs are kinda close together and i find it difficult to use from the front panel (but that's no worry because it comes with the CueMix software mixer).

Have to agree with kenk, i love my 828 mk2, the knobs are too close together, but performance-wise it kicks ass for the £$£$£$£$£$£$. Sound quality is excelllent, and the flexibility it offers via cuemix is great. Wouldnt be without it now. The other great thing is the fact you can daisy-chain to other motu's for more i/o's is brilliant. TOP PRODUCT

Question: is that 2.9ms low enough to track with plug ins in monitor mode?

Guys, I hope you 'll like this post!
    My config is
    PC AMD 2000+
    Motherboard A7V8X (I guess Via) VIA v4.51
    2 120 Gb HDD UDMA 5
    RAM 512
FW Adapter based on TI Chipset
    Windows XP PRO
    CUBASE SX 2.2.23

My sound card is Motu 828 mk2 and I experiment clicks, pops and even soft electronic distorsion whilst recording audio with my newly bought MOTU.

By playing with the size of the audio buffers I can reduce those pain-in-the-ass noises but can't get completly rid of it.

In Motu 's website they say that
    - one should make sure that his HDDs are fast enough
    - that the digital devices connected to the Motu are properly synch.
    - FW adapter is based on either TI or Lucent

Well my HDD is kind of fast and I have removed all digital and my adapter is based on TI.

I still get the clicks&pops and Motu support is not responding!

hi darnballah. I have a feelin g it's a combination of a few things. go to xpnet and do all the xp tweaks if you haven't. Turn off and drivers you aren't using (spdif, etc.)-try switching to wdm. Are the clicks, pops after you render?

This thread is very interesting to me, and I just want to share a problem i have been having, as a)it might shed futher light on this issue, and b) someone might solve my problem at the same time lol.

I have had a Motu 828 MkII for about a year now, and i have run it with the same DAW plus Cubase with no problems, seriously its been absolutely rock solid. I used ASIO for this application.

Recently (2 weeks ago) I swapped to Sonar becuase a) it was actually the same price to convert to Sonar 6 as it was to upgrade from Sx3 to Cubase 4 Producer, plus Sonar had Audio Snap.

So here is the problem, I am suddenly getting all kinds of clicks and pops when I play back audio and try and record, it literally ruined a great vocal session the other day.

Also the audio engine keeps crashing on play back. Now i have tried it with different combinations of I/O buffer and mix buffers ranging from 128 to 512, and something tells me if this still happens at 512 there is a problem, i used to be able to run this set up at 128 with cubase.

Now i am not knocking sonar at all, i jsut figure as I am new to it, i am doing somethign stupid. What is the difference between WDm and ASIO, and Sonar seemed to choose to use ASIO in the set up, can i switch to WDM?

In addition to this i also use a focusrite Octepre into the ADAT ports, this used to work well with cubase as internal clock, but i am wandering whether Sonar is not as solid, and its worth rejigging the system to go the other way, ie set the octepre as clock master, with the motu and sonar slaved to it. I am loath to do this though becuase it means i will have to always have the octepre on, even when not actually using any of it inputs, and that thing runs hot in my rack.

    Answers on a postcard please.

    Hey

Not that anyone seems to be reading this post anymore, but I am a great believer in sharing info. So for the benefit of any future adventurers in the world of MOTU and Sonar here we go.

I have expereimented with both the WDM and ASIO drivers and for my money the WDM sounded very wooly compared to the ASIO, so I stuck with the ASIO stuff because it has direct monitoring and sounds better as well.

With this set up i can get down to around 256 with a fairly heavy track count but no effects and record without incident.

However the methodolgy I have come to use is direct monitoring. This has one disadvantage in that you cannot monitor input with an effect on it, this is not a functionality i ever use, but it should be stated.

What i have taken to doing is to set the Buffer size for both ASIO and the Disk to 1024, this is massive and does introduce noticable latency in that the play back starts after a slight delay, however its as solid as a rock. I then use Cuemix for monitoring, this means that I monitor with 0 latency, record perfect tracks, with the advantage that say if i want to quickly overdub something in an existing mix with heavy effects etc, i can do so without mucking about with latencies and turning off effects etc.

In fact the major advantage is to workflow, its a set and forget, I now don't have to muck up about with my buffer settigns between tracking and mixing which is a god send, plus i ahve rock solid recording with 0 latency monitoring.

NB, this could also be achieved with any soundcard that offers direct monitoring via ASIO drivers, examples being the Focusrite Saffire Pro, or the Presonus Firstudio, although I would wait a while on the Firstudio as i have heard that they are having teething troubles with faulty hardware and slightly hokey drivers. I know presonus though and give it 6 months it will be fine.

When you are using the ADAT ports for the MOTU and Octepre, are you also using a BNC cable to sync up the wordclocks? That's what I had to do with my Behringer ADA8000 and Motu 828 MkII to get rid of some little crackles during playback. Once I synced up the wordclocks using a BNC coax cable (Radio Shack, etc) everything worked fine. So yeah, you may need an ADAT optical cable AND a BNC cable... see if it works....

    Sorry should have stated that.

I have connected up my Motu to my OCtepre via both ADAT and BNC. I am using SONAR/Motu as Master and the Octepre as Slave.

The only other thought is that the digital card in the octepre is knackered. It has stopped auto recognizing the settings, and I have to manually set the Bit rate and Frequency. I will give Focusrite a call.

    PS

The pops and clicks persist at low latency even when not using the Octepre.

I was using the 3.6.7.3 drivers, I have since downloaded the new drivers (3.6.7.4 The ones that are supposed to be Visat compatable), seemed slightly cleaner at 1024, I will try lowering the latency with these new drivers and see if the pops have disapeared.

    Keep you all posted.

    You know its funny

Just looked at my Avatar which is my glorious lovely Warwick i Bought back in 2002, 5 years i have had it, not a damn thing has gone wrong and i have had to replace teh battery once.

Compared to my DAW where jsut this weekend the monitor stopped working i spent 2 hours trouble shooting, then started again when i thumped it, my focusrite is being shaky, and I had to take back the new MCU i bought becuase the touch control circuit went on a fader, and it really does make you wander if its all worth it.

I love picking up that bass somedays, its such an antidote.
