MOTU 828mk3 and firewire question

Hi,

I did a search and didnt find an answer here, and was gonna send an email to motu tech support but it appears you have to be a registered user first

Im think about buying the motu 828mk3, does any have any idea where i can find a
PCI express card with a TI or Lucent chipset?, im having a hard time finding one that doesnt have poor reviews

i found this, but the reviews dont look so promising

i also found this, and was wondering if it would be a good choice, is PCIe really going to give me an advantage over PCI, if not ill get that one

any thoughts or direction would be much appreciated, thanks

For audio, PCIe will give you no advantage whatsoever.  Get the PCI TI chipset card.

ADS and SIIG both make good TI chipset FW controllers.
Go with a TI chipset FW contoller that's known to work well.
This way... there is no doubt.  It'll work well...

Some new PC's only have PCIex1 (and X16) slots and in those they must use a PCIex1 type card.

    PCIex1 type card.

There's nothing wrong with a good PCIe TI chipset FW controller.
You can find good units in both PCI and PCIe

9 pin to 6 pin cable needed 2011/05/24 16:47:19 (permalink)
I just bought a MOTU 828 mk3 Hybrid and noticed that the MOTU firewire port is a 9 pin (1394b).  I have TI chipset on my MOBO but the connectors are 6 pin and 4 pin.  So, I have to purchase a 9 pin to 6 pin cable or adapter.

So, make sure you have the right firewire cable or an adapter for your firewire card.

    Good luck.

the cable that comes with the MOTU has two FireWire Type B ports (9-pin to 9-pin), are the ports on the right side on this card Type B ports (9 pin)?, i want to be sure and avoid having to order an adapter later on

also ive been told i should go for a Belkin or SIIG card instead if possible as they are considered to be the standards, ive heard of those names but never heard of Syba before today

    again thanks all

You can experience an issue with a particular TI chipset Firewire controller... but it's rare.
I wouldn't worry about the name on the FW controller.

    Hi Tweakberry:

First, I am glad that Jim replied.  I looked at your link to that card; two 9 pin ports and one 6 pin port.  So it looks like connectivity should not be a problem.  BTW, my 9pin to 6pin firewire cable shipped today, which means I do not have to use the MOTU Hybrid's USB connection (although that has been solid and RTL's are good--I hope the firewire will be even better).

Please report back to us once you get the new TI card.
