MOTU 828mk3

I'm SO glad I didn't buy an 828mkII in December... :)

Looks nice, but I won't be upgrading from my 828mkII. The new front panel controls look pretty handy, but I'm not crazy about paying extra for on-board effects. Personally, I'd rather add my effects as plugins in my host and that's exactly why I sold all of my outboard effects (with the exception of the compressor/EQ on my channel strip). I do like the look of the new CueMix GUI.

I think the effects are not to replace plugins but to provide a way to have some effects for confidence while using the zero latency monitoring. Plugins would only work while using input monitoring at full latency.

I like the new model and the new features. I might not have used the higher frequency rates, but I would have likely used the effects for monitoring.

Since the price is the same, I would have been quite bummed if I'd bought the 828mkII (I seriously thought about it, but opted for the Ultralite, which does everything I need at the moment and would be good for a laptop if I later go that route.). I seem to have a penchant for buying a model shortly before it either is dropped or is replaced by a major upgrade!

BTW, if I were jumping to the 828 price range, I'd have to consider the Fireface 400, as well as several other good interfaces out there. But the 828 would get strong consideration.

This is simply the prettiest thing I have seen out there in the sub $800 range, and I must say that my old 828mkII was by far the most dependable sound card that I ever used (I have owned about a dozen decent cards, but the 828mkII was simply the best and most stable of the bunch). So I would expect GREAT things out of the new mkIII as well.
