MOTU Ultralite + Sonar 8.5.1 + WASAPI drivers - can they run at 24 bit/48K?

Hi All

Keep getting incompatible format or device in use message in Sonar. All Sonar settings + Windows device settings are consistent and nothing else is using Ultralite.

Does this combination work for anyone else? I switch back to ASIO and all is well. I'm only interested in trying WASAPI becuase as soon as my Athlon Quad hits 50% on one core (minimal on other cores - and yes, multicore option is selected in Sonar) I start getting a few pops. Not a show stopper but thought I'd give it a try.

Is there a way to better balance the load on the cores (doubt it but I thought I'd ask).

Any advice much appreciated.

I've got a MOTU Ultralite but I've never tried using WASAPI driver mode because I always assumed ASIO or even WDM would be best for the device.  I'm not sure what WASAPI really is or how it works or what kind of drivers MOTU has for that mode.

however, I might have a little advice about the MOTU.  the only mode I've been able to get it to work without a few pops/clicks is in ASIO mode using FIREWIRE with a TI chipset.  that's a lot of variables, but I tried all of the following with these results:

USB WDM and ASIO - quite a few pops and clicks with either mode in USB
Firewire non-TI chipset:  WDM and ASIO both have pops and clicks as bad as USB
Firewire with TI chipset: WDM - this one wasn't bad, but I have to move my latency slider up to a higher latency to keep the pops and clicks out.
Firewire with TI chipset: ASIO - this is the best mode and I can run the MOTU without pops and clicks at the lowest latency if I'm not using softsynths or FX realtime.  I still have to increase my latency buffers in the MOTU audio console if I'm mixing.

as far as balancing the cores - I have a quad core intel and my cores are very well balanced - none of them far exceed the others.

What's your buffer setting? There's a bug in Windows 7 that prevents a sound device from working in WASAPI if it's set to lower than 4 ms.

As you found out, ASIO doesn't have this problem.

tarsier - I don't have win7 myself - I'm on XP but the OP didn't say which version of windows he has.

also - I just noticed you said in the title: Sonar 8.5.1 - is there a reason you didn't upgrade to 8.5.3?

Thanks for the replies, very much appreciated. SOrry, I should have said I'm on W7x64.  Sonar 8.5.1 is rock solid for me and nothing in 8.5.3 tempted me to change. Maybe that might cure my slight pops? I'll have to have a long think about that.

"As you found out, ASIO doesn't have this problem" - Very interesting, I've only tried < 4ms. Due a fix from M$ then, but I won't hold my breath.

    ASIO is good.

    Thanks again chaps
