MP3 encoder not working! Help!

Hi all

I am a fairly experianced user of cakewalk, and have been composing for about two years now on Home Studio 9. However, i have not bought the MP3 encoder until just recently, and i can't get it to work. I'm not very computer savvy, so you'll have to bare with me and my bad explainations.

After running 'MP3Encoder.exe', I opened cakewalk and found that the 'export audio' button was not pressable. I then found what I beleive is the actual program that 'MP3Encoder.exe' installed. It's titled 'mp3enc.exe'. When I tried to run it, I got a message saying 'Security key missing or incorrect!'. I can't think of anything I did wrong during the installation.

Oh, and also: I didn't install the 30 day trial of the MP3 encoder because it was already used when i got the program. Could that be a factor?

You got the software used? Yeah, that would probably be the problem. HomeStudio is a single-user non-transferrable license. So you won't be able to register it, update it, or get Cakewalk assistance.

ur solutions are twofold- and rest on the edge of an ethical precipice:
a)export ur work as audio and encode using a free mp3 encoder, such as iTunes or Audacity
    b) buy HS6 for about $100 and then you'll be able to use the encoder you bought legally...

    hmm..good angel, bad angel??

Although you made the mistake of buying used software...
You can just export the mixes as 16bit wav files, then use something like CDex (which works great) to create your mp3 files.

    See, the thing is...

The export audio button isn't even clickable. I thought buying the Encoder would change that. I'm guessing this is because the program is used, too.

If I were to buy a newer version of HS, I could still open and edit all of my old music made in the old program, right?

yes - your projects can be opened with SHS6 -

the encoder won't change the EXPORT AUDIO - it's greyed out because you don't have any AUDIO selected to export!

    Yes

That is the best thing you could do in this case. You really should buy a legitimate copy. Not only will you have a better version of the software but you will be able to get technical support, free upgrades for HS6 and discounts on future upgrades and products.

Yes, the Nero stuff and a whole bunch of other items appear as effecs in SONAR. In truth I ignore them as I know they are not intended for DAW use. You could try to use it but I expect that the result will not be good. You can do as others that use external mp3 encoders do; export a wav and then encode the mp3 with the external tool.
