MP3 export, does CWENC work with S5?

Hi all.

I remember hearing about this add-on that allows mp3 and ogg vorbis export capability but on the download page for it there's a blurb about it not working with S4. Do I take it that means S5 as well?

Are there any other free encoders for mp3 out there for S5?

Wow, no one on this? How does everyone make mp3's from tracks? Do you encode as a separate process?

I use Sound Forge 8 which has the latest and greatest Fraunhofer IIS MPEG Layer 3 Codec Professional v3.32, built into it. I can open my final 64bit rendered stereo wave file from SONAR 5 straight into SF8 and do a quick 16/44 320kbps stereo MP3, in a matter of seconds.

I use the Lame MP3 encoder for converting using Sonar 5, I did the same using Sonar 2 and 3 also Perform a search in Sonar forums for LAME MP3 and you will find instructions I posted on how to apply this. The Lame that comes with Sonar 5 us great and it provides you wil using high , highest, or normal quality. I suggest using that. open up (tools and Lame

I have never had the ability to apply the ID3v tags that I would like to use. If anyone knows how to use LAME and apply CWEC using ID the ID3v tagging, I would be soooo greatful.

    Peace.

That's another nice feature, in Sound Forge, the ability to setup customized encode settings, property markings (like copyright and such) and ID3 settings and save as individual templates, for instant re-call when creating MP3's.

I have actually been curious about this myself. Aside from other programs where you can convert wav to mp3 (my prog of choice is CDEX), does anyone know if CWENC works with S5???

I just find it outright silly that Cakewalk charges us the price of a Professional sequencing software, and leaves out a crucial element such ast MP3 exporting and then charges us to use it. For the $20.00 price tag, they should have just included it in the software.

I love Sonar 2 - 5 but the MP3 export should have been an added feature as a perk.

krizrox, does the purchased CWEC from Cakewalk allow for ID3V2 tagging when exporting to MP3?

I and anyone else who bought Pa9 already paid for it. You want I should pay twice so you don't have to pay once? Especially cheap of you considering you can download and ue Lame for free.

    JB,

Lame is great, but it doesn't allow for the tagging, so Yes, i think Cakewalk should allow it to be included.

Pa9, S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, that was several versions ago. Now, since we are on S5, I think they should provide more for the buck. Is it cheap of me to ask for this? YES.

Do I support cakewalk products and demand they support us as users, YES.

I've supported Home Studio, Music Creator 2002, Sonar 2.0, 3.0, 4.0, 5.0 Z3Ta, Dimension Pro, Project5. I would like to be given something Free with a purchase as a supportive user of Cakewalks products.

    Need I say more?

    Peace

And, if you had ever ponied up the $20 you would have had the MP3 encoder for all those versions.

Actually I have heard that the one that came free with PA9 can be enabled in SONAR 5 if you still have the original serial number.

I use lame with either the winLame or Razor interface and and then some thing like http://www.id3-tagit.de/ to set the tag. I have bought the MP3 encoder for HS4 but probably will not do the same for Sonar 5. Lame gives you better control and does not have the 48K 16 bit limmitation. I've also noticed that lame just sounds better.

I aggree with Jesse G they should of thrown the encoder in for free.

Yeah, I still have that MP3 codec, that I got included with my Pro Suite bundle, from 5 years ago. I would not want to pay for it again either. I am sure Cakewalk is not going to give it away free, since it is not theirs to give and they have to pay a licensing fee, for each registered copy. Not fair to take a $20 profit hit, per copy, by including it free, when most users don't need it or already have it.
I prefer using Sound Forge (which uses the same Fraunhofer MP3 encoder) anyway, because it's GUI and dialog boxes are extremely easy to use and customize various encode settings, plus you can set property markings (like copyrights) and ID3 settings, at the same time and you can create your own convenient preset templates.

so, does anyone know if CWENC works with S5?

I just tested it and it looks like "no" on that one.

As for Larry's post, he's got a point. I was just inquiring if CWENC worked with S5 because then I'd just go ahead and install it and have FREE mp3 encoding for little effort. Everyone here seems to use a multi-stage process. I currently export a .wav and if I need an mp3 (which I almost always do), I use db PowerAmp to convert. I have Sound Forge 7 which won't do it natively, so the only other way to do it is to use CDex or Wavelab. I didn't know SF8 does it natively, might be time to upgrade!!

Answer question first: yes it supports tagging

as far as throwing it in for free - to my knowledge Cake has never responded to this issue. If they have and I missed then I missed it. I can only assume there was some issue with licensing and perhaps Cake made a decision to NOT include it because not that many people care about it or need it. If someone knows the real reason speak up, please. I'm not interested in debating anyone on whether it should or shouldn't be included. If I understand what you're argument is, you would have been happier if Cake had included the feature and simply added the $20 to the cost of the program or the upgrade. Well, how do you do that exactly and make sense of it - in regards to upgrades? Do they keep charging everyone the $20 every time there is an upgrade, even if you have already bought it? To me this all just seems a little childish.

Just curious - how does Steinberg or Digidesign handle this? Do they include MP3 capability? How about Acid or Vegas or Samplitude or Digital Performer or Bias or Logic? What do they do?

This is from the cwenc homepage: "cwenc has been tested with HomeStudio 2002 exclusively, but I have had positive feedback from people using it with Sonar version 1, 2 and 3. Unfortunately it seems that it will not work with Sonar version 4. Since I don't own (and do not plan to buy) Sonar 4 I have no intentions on fixing this. You can however configure Sonar 4 to use the basic Lame MP3 encoder directly."

CWEC does work in sonar 5. It gives an error message but works just fine if set up correctly. I use it all the time. Search for some threads on how to do it.

    Oh well,

I guess we will not have free MP3 exporting in Sonar. I have LAME MP3 working just fine and I am happy using it, I just would like use ID3v2 tagging when I export to MP3.
