MSV Not Invented Here
Hi Peeps I've just finished my latest project. Before you click any links I should explain a few things. MSV Not Invented Here will be included in an album I am creating called "Culture Ships." The Culture series is a collection of science fiction novels by the late Iain M Banks. The three previous pieces from this album can be classed as "dark ambient," and this next offering is pretty much the same, so may be a bit of a challenge for peeps here that prefer three minute pop songs. So, you have been warned This latest creation features one old toy and one new toy. The Old Toy: I have had Absynth since V3 and I like this synth a lot, when I can be bothered putting away my virtual analogue VSTi synths. So Absynth 5 is used here and nothing else. The New Toy: Adaptiverb... Yeah, that reverb that isn't a reverb... Not to me anyway. Yes, I am sure it makes a very good reverb, but I am finding it an absolute inspiration and I'm having loads of fun running Absynth through it, as well as other instruments and samples. The piece lasts fifteen minutes long. Quite a long one for me. It is not easy listening... More sort of curtains closed... sit in front of your hi-fi and chill, while wondering what comes next. Anyway, for your *ahem* listening pleasure:- https://soundcloud.com/synkrotron/msv-not-invented-here cheers andy

I'm half way through this now and I keep expecting Robert Fripp to rip into a disjointed buzzsaw solo. With this genre it's pretty hard to come up with any meaningful comments about the mix since just about anything you choose to do is correct. The sounds are pretty darned cool though, with a subtle tension that ebbs and flows nicely. I can for sure see this playing in the Atlanta airport inter-terminal tunnel.

Haha! Thanks for listening Kevin. I appreciate it all the more because this isn't exactly popular stuff You're right, of course... Not easy to comment on anything really because, like you say, whatever comes out of those speakers I'll just say, "yeah, it's supposed to do that." Thanks again for listening... I hope you made it through to the other side okay... cheers andy

May I also extol the virtues of Absynth 5? I made my first entire album with it all over the place. It kind of sucked, but not because of Absynth. Absynth is brilliant. Your piece is great, I liked how I could hear everything even at low levels. I like dark ambient stuff and this is a fun background listen. My life does not permit me to "chill" even for 15 minutes . . . oh well. -Tom cheers, -Tom

Well, now that I know that Tom, I'll make some more for you Don't you fancy doing some yourself Tom? Dust off Absynth and get yourself some Adaptiverb Thanks for listening and I'm glad you managed to listen. This stuff drives my missus potty so I have to choose my moments to carry out the usual speaker checks haha! cheers andy

Hi Daryl, Thanks for your patience yet again... You have listened to pretty much everything I have posted here over the last 18 months or so. I guess it could have been a bit shorter, but I had made my mind up on the length before hand. It was fun experimenting with all the different combinations of Absynth and Adaptiverb. And this time round I sculpted out quite a bit of space here and there so it almost goes silent between certain parts. Thanks again for listening cheers andy

Good piece Andy, albeit a bit long I thought, but I guess that was your intention to sustain the mood of the ambient spectrum. I too am not much of an Absynth user but this track urges me to check out some more ambient patches. Thanks for sharing.

Fifteen minutes, Andy? You're really pushing the attention span envelope here . Quite the piece really, I'm in awe of what you've done here. This has inspired me to make greater use of Absynth.

Hiya Steve First of all, thanks for dragging this post back to the top again Yeah, all Absynth, although I need to highlight that most of the Absynth sounds are heavily processed by Adaptiverb, which can make a bit difference. But, yeah... It's been fun digging through some of the more obscure soundscape and sound effect presets in Absynth Thanks for listening Steve and taking the time to comment here... Much appreciated cheers andy

Hi Ramesh, Thanks for checking this out. If I was honest with myself, I would admit that this could have been quite a bit shorter. I normally let a piece develop a little before deciding on a length but in the case of "MSV Not Invented Here" I had already decided on the length and I then dragged the project out to suit. Thanks for listening cheers andy

Haha! Yeah... I know, and you deserve another medal for sticking with it Phil I think I've said before that, when I listen to what you are producing I never consider that you would even bother to try and listen to this stuff. I forget that just because we produce one particular style of music that we cannot enjoy other types of music and art . Thanks so much for listen Phil, I really appreciate the considerable time you have put into listening to my creations cheers andy

Hiya Wookiee Yeah... 5.1 is a direction I really need to look into. I'm guessing I would need an appropriate sound card for starters? It always scares me to be honest. Perhaps I should pose the question in the Techniques forum here... Thanks for listening to all fifteen minutes my friend... Not easy... By the time I have finished something as long as this, and as complicated (automations abound), I must have listened to it for many hours haha! cheers andy

Hey andy! A Ghostship ride, for sure! lol. I love Absynth too, and it's great for these ambient pieces. But I hafta tell ya, 15 minutes of it on an album probably doesn't work for me. I need for it to develop more...melodically a bit maybe. However, the EQ and balance seemed about perfect to my ears on my new monitors. Love the imagination it must have taken to compose this! Tony

Hi Tony, Thanks for listening. I always understand that this sort of stuff isn't going to be to everyone's liking so I really appreciate it when people at least give it a go. If you managed to go the full fifteen minutes then extra kudos to you I have a guitar piece which is doing the rounds at the moment. It's called Ianira. My guitar playing doesn't even come close to what you are doing, but it was fun, and it has a little bit more melody for you . No pressure, of course cheers andy
