MXL R144 Ribbon Microphone.
Does anybody have any experience with this mic? I did some research on it and most of what I read was positive feedback with good reviews. I also watched a video of this mic in action and liked what I heard but just wondering if anyone here has or uses one. I like MXL mics in general and have quite a few in my locker already but this is going to be my first ribbon mic. I've actually wanted one for quite some time now and this looked like a good choice for an entry level ribbon mic. If anyone has any experience with this particular mic I'd appreciate hearing about it. Good or bad.
Thanks Good Peeps...

The 144 is the same as the 44 I believe, just a different model # MXL made for guitar center. And it is a nice mic. I use it mostly for electric guitar and it sounds great for that. I've used it for horns - trombone and French, and it also worked well for that. A bit dull for female vox - don't know about males. For less than $100, it is worth it just for guitar. It really sounds great for that. Nigh perfect. Most of the guitars in the songs in my sig were done w/ the MXL 44. @

Thanks for the reply AT. You're right on par with most of the reviews I've read regarding the R144. Most reviewers report that this mic works great on guitar cabs, stringed instruments and horns. Reviews are hot and cold with both male and female vocals. I am mostly interested in recording my acoustic guitars with this mic. I tried listening to your songs from your soundcloud link but got the following message. I'll check back later. Sorry! We can't find that user. A report has been sent to our tech team, and they're looking in to the problem. Please check back in a bit.

I got one recently and would rate it as okay: it definitely has a flavor, one that I don't love with my vocals, but have used with success on saxophone and improvised winds. I haven't tried it on everything yet, thought that it was decent as an amp mic. I would define that flavor as thin and crisp...almost tinny, but I don't mean to demean it, it's just a flavor. For some voices - or for some songs - it might be a great vocal mic.

Thanks. Guitar amps and horns seem to be where the reviews shine most with this mic. I've also read positive feedback for its performance on stringed instruments. My main applications will be for acoustic guitar and my electric guitar amp.

Hi AT, I checked the link and it worked this time. "Tryptophane Blues" was a trip. Man we've all been there, eh. I enjoyed the tune and the guitars sounded good. Especially in "As Good As It Gets". Thanks again.

Glad you liked it. The R 144 (or 44) works great on guitar cab. I use a small but dampened room for tracking. It was a sun room (converted porch with 2 mostly glass walls) that has thick drapes and a single bed that is good for absorption. @

I am very impressed with this mic so far. I tried it on acoustic guitar and a quick vocal test. It shined on both. The sound was very warm and natural. I ran it through my SP VTB1 and for me it is the perfect match. The vocal didn't need any EQ or tweaking at all. Sounded very natural. The acoustic guitar however did. Just a little in the high end. I've been a fan of MXL mics for several years but even more so now. This mic is an exceptional value IMHO.
